As long as the voter can prove their residency in the state and their citizenship, what’s the big deal? Not saying I’m for it or against it, but I wonder why you’re against it.

Current Federal Law pushes states to either have same day voter registration or the use of provisional ballots. Provisional ballots can be more of an election security and fraud risk than same day registration since the result is a bunch of ballots that may or may not be legitimate, leading to post election disputes. And we've all seen those cases play out in the courts, and how certain political parties use and abuse that process.

By contrast, same day voter registration can be performed in an accurate and secure fashion - if nothing else registrants can be required to do the registration in person in front of election officials - avoiding the kind of mass, off site registrations that have been implicated in voter fraud in previous elections.

It is my understanding after talking to family living in Maine, that same- day registration is not enough time to effectively varify eligibility to vote.

If same-day registration isn’t enough time to verify eligibility, why wouldn’t they just accept the votes as provisional until the registrations can be verified? What’s the harm of that so long as the votes are legal?

Yes but ONLY UNDER ONE CONDITION:

All votes cast by “same day” registrants must be placed in the same category as Absentee voters and citizenship and residence are checked before the vote is counted.

No harm if all same-day registered voters are legal, but plenty of harm if they are not. I would guess that it is easier to make sure all voters are legally registered before election day than to un-count their vote after the election.
