Critic of ATF gun-trafficking program raised no objection when briefed last year

A chief Republican critic of a controversial U.S. anti-gun-trafficking operation was briefed on ATF’s “Fast and Furious” program last year and did not express any opposition, sources familiar with the classified briefing said Tuesday.

Rep. Darrell Issa (Calif.), who has repeatedly called for top Justice Department officials to be held accountable for the now-defunct operation, was given highly specific information about it at an April 2010 briefing, the sources said. Members of his staff also attended the session, which Issa and two other Republican congressmen had requested.

Fast and Furious targeted Mexican gun traffickers but was linked to the killing of a U.S. law enforcement officer. Republicans in Congress have criticized the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives over its handling of the operation, with Issa calling it “felony-stupid bad judgment” during a hearing last week in which he grilled a Justice Department official.

At the briefing last year, bureau officials laid out for Issa and other members of Congress from both parties details of several ATF investigations, including Fast and Furious, the sources said. For that program, the briefing covered how many guns had been bought by “straw purchasers,’’ the types of guns and how much money had been spent, said one source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the briefing was not public.

“All of the things [Issa] has been screaming about, he was briefed on,’’ said one source familiar with the session.

All great points. Why would ATF stall on info they have already given to the Congressman? Why did ATF brief congress and the AG didn't know anything about it? Did ATF tell Congress they were going to let these guns go?

I know the answer to the last one is a resounding "NO" because moving contraband across an international border would require State Dept. involvement and everybody knows that.

In April 2010 Issa was a minority member, not the committee chair, and therefore knew that raising a stink at that time might have no other effect than to give time for the thugs at the ATF to cover their tracks.

Of course he was briefed, Gunrunner’s been around for a while. But did they tell Issa about Obama’s change to the program that allowed guns into Mexico?

Exactly

1. What exactly was the content of the briefing? Was it made clear at the briefing that the guns were going to be allowed into Mexico?

2. Are we seriously to believe that Congress was briefed on the program at a higher level of detail than Holder? Seriously?

Along with my other posts of what is buried in this article BTW:that Melson is not resigning... and the entire buttass backwards theories in this article. (When both the Assistant and AG under sworn testimony have said they know nothing) how can the DOJ brief what they don’t know?

Also: Notice the title. No where does it use the proper operation- Fast and Furious. It is a diversion. Is the Washington Post playing lawyer/biased for Holder and Obama this badly?
I remember reading that the media were stepping up to fightthesmears for Obama but this is a very serious felony we are talking about not some campaign.

So let me get this straight:

You cannot get any answers out of the ATF, now, under Subpeona, but a year ago, they offered all of this information freely.

And this comes from an anonymous source.

Riiiiiiight.

Good old WallPole. They can be counted on to lie, outright, every time.

You forgot that hidden in the middle of the article it insinuates big time that

Melson is not resigning

““This irresponsible and false accusation is indicative of a Justice Department bereft of leadership and rattled by the revelations of its own misconduct,’’ Hill added.”

Mr. Hill is exactly right.

“Rep. Darrell Issa (Calif.), who has repeatedly called for top Justice Department officials to be held accountable for the now-defunct operation...”

Yeah, folks, why exactly is it now defunct? /s

That's a very good one. If Holder says his people didn't tell him, then it's not logical that his people would have told Congress. I'm about to agree with the leftists that Issa must have known, because that means Holder knew. Minor embarrassment for Issa = jail time for Holder.

I saw a while back that one of the main defenses of Gunwalker would be to confuse the original program with the Obama modification that allowed the straw purchases and let the guns walk. The program used to be about tracking crime (illegal purchases) after it had occurred, not allowing crime to happen in the first place.

Indeed it is good. If we know the content of that briefing from the Congressional Record, then Holder is busted, and on paper. This should be in an email to Issa.

. This should be in an email to Issa.

Maybe that's the trump card that Issa's been holding as he lets the administration dig itself in deeper and deeper.

The Washington Post is obviously worried and is trying to protect one of its favorites. My supposition is that it is Hillary Clinton and her people in the State Department.

So even it true ..if one Republican critic didn't say something at the time it make is all ok?...

The program was a dumb ass idea that was implemented and run even dumber to the point of criminal... at best people need to get canned or at worse get tossed in the can for a year or two

Mayhaps, was there a dead border patrol agent resulting from the use of one of these weapons known at the time? Was the actual truth and motive behind this program fully briefed to him? This is bullshit. Getting a briefing from liars amounts to complicity with the lies now, huh? F@ck them.
