OXFORD, Mich. (WXYZ) - A mother and daughter are being treated for bites after the family pit bull went on the attack.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Department says a mother and daughter were arguing early Thursday morning inside their home in Oxford Township. That's when the family dog attacked the daughter. The mother then tried to pull the pit bull away and was also attacked.
Three other children inside the home locked themselves in a closet to keep to hide from the vicious dog.
When deputies arrived at the home the mother was on the porch and the dog was still inside the home. One deputy approached the animal which started growling and showing its teeth. The deputy was forced to shoot the dog which ran out the door. It was later found outside the home and was put down.
An Oakland County Animal Control officer found a second pit bull inside and removed it from the home.
The 39-year-old mother and 16-year-old daughter were treated at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and released, the children inside the home were not injured.
Odin is now the lone male in a house of 5 dogs.
Gypsy, the smallest of them all, is a shameless instigator when she wants to play, resorting to nipping hocks, if need be, just to get someone to chase her.
Occasionally, the other 3 bitches get fed up with her provocations and “turn on her as a pack”.
They never harm her, they just surround her and show dominant posturing and growling.
She doesn’t take it to heart and play-bows to show her submissive good will.
Odin, however, does not like seeing her thusly intimidated and simply shoulders his huge self into the midst of it all, sending the ersatz ‘hit squad’ scattering.
He’s not growling.
He’s not threatening.
He’s just *there*...’defusing’ the pack tension.
It’s extremely common behavior in dog packs.
When I was a little kid, my 7 pound Poodle would “jump into it” if my dad went to swat me for something.
It infuriated him no end because he thought she was ‘attacking’ him but she was not; she was simply attempting to move between us and defuse the pack stress.
As Odin is a support dog and when we’re in very crowded situations, he presses himself to me tightly and serves to “buffer” me from other people who might otherwise bump into me.
I did *not* teach him to do that.
He apparently senses that I have balance issues and compensates for them.
He is simply displaying a type of normal pack behavior that he’s “modified” to fit our dog/human pack situation.
He loves his “daddy” like crazy but hubby understands that if he starts yelling or acting too angry about something with Odin around it would be an extremely unwise thing to do.
He is “our” dog in name but *my* dog in heart.
We would no more have a fight in front of the dogs than we would if we had children.
It is not right to put either of them into such an emotionally conflicted position.

Is a bull mastiff the same as an English mastiff? My next door neighbors have 2 English mastiffs.
My Portuguese Podengo Medio used to nap on my coffee table until I put a 40 gallon breeder tank aquarium on it.
Now there’s no room for her so she naps on either my apothecary chest or my art supply cabinet.

Luckily she was on leash and I pulled her back - but she was going in like Wonder Woman - to settle the matter.... conclusively!!!! “
My ex ~started~ his physical abuse with “punctuation seat/wall/door punches” that progressed to brutal beatings, two of which have given me permanent neurological damage.

Luckily with a Bull Mastiff - they are bred to subdue.
That would be an interesting thing to do to train a Bull Mastiff. But the claws could really do some damage.

Bull Mastiff in backyard. Halloween kids party next door. Kid gets confused and opens gate to wrong back yard and does the kid running shriek though Bull Mastiff's backyard.
Bull Mastiff does what it is bred to do - and lucky for that kid it was a Bull Mastiff and not another breed of dog.
Dog Barked (”roar”) and then tackled the kid and held him until its owners got there. Kid got a one inch crape along the cranium. Scalp wounds bleed profusely. Parents were quite upset. Dog was put down. :(

Rule #1: NEVER use -any- person known to the dog as “the agitator” in protection training.

Our German Shepherd does funny things like that as well. I personally believe the guarding instinct is so powerful that they like to guard and protect even when not necessarily needed. It is obvious that tension was new to this dog and he didn’t know what to do? So, he guarded your Mom and stuck to her like glue. In his mind... just to make sure that she was okay. Good doggie!! (I bet your step-Dad watched his step for a few days, huh?!)
You are not the first to say that. My apologies. Her instincts were, in this case, better than mine.
Unfortunately the law wouldn't be very forgiving to my canine Wonder Woman.

The intent was to get a smaller more aggressive Mastiff for a herdsman's night dog to drive off predators and subdue poachers.
In final composition it is (IIRC) 3/4 Mastiff and 1/4 Bull dog.
They are a fine dog. In a lifetime of dog ownership no breed has impressed me like a healthy active Bull Mastiff.

The MOST important part of ScH or police work is that the dog -instantly- “outs” on command.
Again, the greatest “danger” is at the *other*, theoretically “smarter” end of leash.
So the Bull mastiff is smaller and more aggressive. Our neighbors formerly had 2 old dogs that weighed close to 200 pounds each and they made me nervous just because they were so huge. They have 2 young ones now and I am careful to give them treats through the fence so they will like me. :D
Yes, he did. He would laugh about it, but he said after that he knew my mother came first in the dog’s affections.
The funny thing is the dog loved my step father too, but when he felt he was forced to choose, he chose the 5’2” petite woman over the 6’ man. He never growled, barked or did anything in any way threatening but he showed them he was there and he was on Mother’s side.
