Compromise on Pledge of Allegiance in Oregon Town Has Some Seeing Red
Fox News ^ | 6/28/2011 | Dan Springer

An Oregon town's City Council voted down a proposal to say the Pledge of Allegiance before every council meeting, but later passed a compromise that seemed to make no one happy.

The approved measure allows the pledge to be recited at just four Eugene City Council meetings a year, those closest to the Fourth of July, Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Flag Day.

It was supposed to be simple, but Councilman Mike Clark soon found out when you’re dealing with God and country, nothing in Eugene is easy.

The city council compares reciting the Pledge of Alligence to the Communist Manifesto and the Mayor calls the pledge "divisive".

Home of Nike U. aka University of Oregon. Why am I not shocked at all?

Maybe if they said it this way....

“Juro lealtad a la bandera de los Estados Unidos de América, ya la república que representa, una nación bajo Dios, indivisible, con libertad y justicia para todos.”

...Maybe no one would object.

The town is run by a bunch of commie hippies, but not all the hippies there are “progressives.”

There are a lot of veterans and bikers in Eugene who may look a bit wild around the edges, but who love the flag and revere the pledge.

The commie council of Eugene was hot to trot on passing a “living wage” law a couple years ago until many business people showed up at a meeting and flat told them they’d move their businesses out if it passed. That ended the commie’s pursuit of communism on that issue.

School children said it each day with their hand placed over their hearts. This statement from the article is not correct. Before WWII, the arm was raised in a sorta "hale hitler" salute.

To me the only question that ought to be asked is a question to those who don’t want to take the Pledge of Allegiance at each meeting; to wit: What are you afraid of?

I suspect that deep down they don’t want to take a false oath. And what does that say??

Thanks for posting that. I never knew that and had to go searching to see if it was true. I also never knew that in the first pledge they said "My flag" That was changed because they feared immigrants would think it meant the flag of their country. So it became the flag of the United States of America.

Like I said, thanks for posting as I then got a history lesson.

I remember reading that prior to WWII the words “I pledge allegiance” were said with the hand over the heart. With the words “to the flag” the arm was extended palm up towards the flag and remained in that position until the recitation was finished.

Yo..... Eugene

Two easy steps:
---(1) Throw these bums out of office
---(2) Elect right-thinking patriots

Eugene, OR City Council website

Behind each councilmember’s picture is their email address. I understand they voted 5 - 2 to ban the Pledge. Who are the 2 that voted against banning the pledge??

Saying the Pledge of Allegiance at every conceivable occasion is just a sham if we are taking away real freedoms in the background. Getting upset about this is just like getting upset about flag burning.

For example, if the Pledge of Allegiance were to disappear from our culture entirely, but at the same time we got rid of the ATF and the TSA, I would call that a major net gain.

There aren’t many advantages to being old but I remember making the pledge as you describe. In a one-room country school with a total of 23 students in eight grades too!

Yeeesh! That was a bizarre little tidbit of history.

But I guess the origins were not nefarious, just the adaptation by fascists.
