A new law offering in-state tuition breaks to some illegal immigrants in Maryland has been suspended after opponents collected tens of thousands of signatures seeking to force the issue onto the 2012 ballot for a referendum.
Maryland's version of the "Dream Act" was to take effect Friday. But Republican Delegate Neil Parrot and other critics flooded the Maryland secretary of state's office in Annapolis with 74,000 signatures more than the 55,000 needed on Thursday evening before the midnight deadline, according to secretary of state spokesman Steve Ackerman...
Opponents turned in 60,000 signatures last month but only 47,000 were certified by the State Board of Elections, Ackerman told FoxNews.com, adding that the rest were tossed for various reasons.
The state board has until mid-July to certify the signatures presented Thursday evening, but it appears that opponents have easily gathered the 8,000 additional signatures needed. If so, the law will be suspended at least until the 2012 election.
The Maryland chapter of the ACLU is challenging the petitions collected online. The group sent a letter in May to the state board asking that the system's legality be examined.

The ACLU should stop making the laws.
Oh, good grief. How can we possibly imagine that the communists among us would object to the truth and correctness for the United States be done?
Perish the thought, the bastards.
So Arizona can’t enforce US immigration law because it’s “racist”, while Maryland is outright ignoring US immigration law but it’s all fine?
Just another day in Obamaland. :)
In an unrelated story, first-time unemployment apps exceeded 400K for the 12th straight week. Thanks freespirited.
This Petition Drive for Referendum is the first smart thing the state's RINO party has done in a long time. Last Fall I called the governor challenger (RINO) Ehrlich’s campaign and told them they should make this Democrat bill (college tuition for illegals) an issue in the election as it didn't get passed until after the election, but they didn't want to offend Hispanics. Look where it got him. Now they have a winner issue with this.
I have to disagree with you,(this time). I was at a flea market a few weeks in a row and there was a booth where people were signing the petition, there were even a few spanish people that signed it, and people that said they were dems. Not only did I get the impression they were disgusted with this horse crap but they weren’t happy with things in general. The only people that seem satisfied are the people at discount food stores that pay with food stamps. I have noticed that black people seem to be angry, I guess seeing the chosen one making a fool of himself everyday is getting to them.
"We voted for MLK and got Amos and Andy!"
It would be great if the state legislators who voted for this could see how many signatures came from their districts. It’s past time for Marylanders to wake up, but I really don’t see that happening any time soon. Like in this millennium.
Hey, no problem. These people should just go apply for the two billion jobs that zer0 created in the last six months. What? They were in China, India, Kenya, and Pawk-eeee-stahn? Oh.
Bummer we can’t dispense with our Dream Act here in Texas.
...but then we have Governor Perry here, who will not let it go away.
Ping!
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
