Sudanese army seizes southern Libyan town (Sudan invades Libya - 400 miles inside Libyan territory)
Daily Telegraph ^ | Jul 1, 2011 | Damien McElroy

Officials overseeing the no-fly zone enforced by Nato over Libya said the Sudanese move north of border had not encountered resistance from troops loyal to Col Muammar Gaddafi.

Since the February uprising against his regime, the Libyan leader's forces have been concentrated around Tripoli, the capital; Sirte, the eastern town that is Col Gaddafi's birthplace and Sebha, the desert outpost where the dictator grew up.

Officials said control of the town of Kufra and nearby military base granted the Sudanese a key strategic foothold between the regime and the opposition Transitional National Council (TNC) which holds the eastern seaboard and a series of rebel enclaves.

Sudanese forces now control perhaps 100,000 sq miles of Libyan territory (roughly New York and Pennsylvania added together). It should be interesting to see where this leads, and what NATO's response is. Talk about fishing in troubled waters...

There won’t be a NATO response.

This is the biggest problem with liberals - the unintended consequences of their actions.

Their implicit racism makes them think that everything they do exists in a vacuum - they don’t even consider the world around Libya, assuming it to be static and immovable due to their deep implicit racism.

This Libyan escapade is a nightmare. Based officially on “caring” but clearly nothing of the sort since they don’t care about other, worse things. Just like all of liberalism. It’s a show; a childish, semi-well-intentioned, semi-utterly-arrogant show.

Lord save us from these men.

So the corrupt Islamic Sudanese regime and its Janjaweed are on the move again in support of the rebels. This is a very interesting development.

I amazed! Who would have thought the Sudanese Army had a truck that could go 400 miles?

BTW, how are they supplying them? Think Redball Express, without the deuce and a half.

yep.

...never mind, that of ALL the nations in the world, Sudan is the one that MOST needed what NATO is doing to Libya.
Gaddafi at most killed hundreds. Islamic Sudan has killed hundreds of thousands of non-muslims.
...instead we drop 2000 bombs on the only dictator in the region, who was actually helping us against Islamists.

Do you have a reference for the “100,000 sq miles of Libyan territory”?

Good point.

Having the Sudanese take over Libya is a true disaster.

China isn’t going to go quietly from those oilfields. They are using and supplying Sudan as their proxy.

This is a huge disaster.

So Sudan has invaded deep into Libya. If they get control of some of the Mediterranean coast they would be able to make a strategic connection between that and the Red Sea. This could have economic benefits to Sudan and further entrench that regime.

For the destabilization of an entire region, thanks must be given to the leadership of Obama./sarc

That’s a straight out guess on my part. I looked up Kufra in Google Maps. It appears to be Libya’s southernmost permanent human settlement (this excludes Bedouins drifting from oasis to oasis). It is 400 miles inside Libya. 400 x 400 is 160,000 sq miles. I took it down a peg to 100,000 miles to be conservative. It’s basically desert, but oil-bearing desert, which is probably why the Sudanese have ventured in. Venturing 4 miles into a country is a border incident. Venturing 400 miles in is an invasion. And an invasion that requires a serious logistical effort, given that everything has to be trucked in due to the route of march being an arid desert.

We're talking a lot of desert here. This is the same ground that Rommel and the British generals fought over in 1941 to 1943, with many of the same logistics problems. 100,000 mi² is not the same as 100,000 mi² of farmland.

POTUS Obama gets his wish. Another Muslim takeover!!!! Peachy, his buddy Gaddafi continues to survive, the rebels and Libya are Muslim terrorists and now the Sudan Muslim murderers and radical terrorists control a big piece of Libya. And....we, the USA, continue to spend our treasure and military assets to propel our sworn enemies into power. Some Fourth of July POTUS Obama has served up!!!!
