Illegal immigration crackdown impacts harvests [Georgia]
CBS News ^ | July 1, 2011 | Mark Strassman

WRAY, Ga., - One of the toughest laws yet to fight illegal immigration went into effect today in Georgia. A federal judge has temporarily blocked the most controversial provision - requiring police to check the immigration status of suspects who don't have proper identification.

But it is now a felony to use false documentation to apply for a job. CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann says Georgia farmers have been anticipating this day, and the law is already having a big effect.

In south Georgia, it's a banner year for blackberries - but a bad year for berry farmer Gary Paulk.

"There's a lot of what appear to be good berries," Paulk said. "If we had the workers."

On one corner of this family farm, twenty acres of blackberries rot away.

"This is a healthy field. And it should have been picked," Paulk said. "But there's nobody here."

We had wild strawberries along our fence rows but Molly, the Jersey cow, loved them and always ate all she could find

Oh my goodness. Did you get strawberry milk from her???:):)

Of course, they support amnesty. Makes them feel good about themselves. They’re elitists and don’t have to live with it in an everyday way like you and me. This applies to many other issues as well as I’m sure you know.

“I prefer blackberries picked from old vines growing wild alongside the road.”

The little wild blackberries growing on vines on the ground are the best for pies.

Lots of Americans available but they’re worn out from midnight basketball.

Well then let us bring back chain gangs, the prisoners are costing a lot as well, put them to work.

Well didn't you read the law? They can't use the prisoners. because it is illegal to hire illegal immigrants.... < /sarc >

Huge percentage of prisoners are imigrantes illegales.

Why is that considered controversial!

This states rights abuse is not going to end well.

Dear Paul, Cry me a f-ing river! If your business model relies on illegal labor then you are a slaver at the least and a criminal at the worst.

Maybe he should try to hire some people instead of just sitting on his arse and complaining.

Excuse me, but I've just gotta say it or I think I'll explode. I'm not calling YOU arrogant and ignorant but honestly....that was an arrogant and ignorant statement. (We all make them sometimes). And it's for sure you're not a farmer with a crop in the field that requires handpicking.

You can believe it or not but there really ARE jobs which Americans won't do and hard, manual labor working in the fields is one of them. Farm labor nationwide is scarce and getting scarcer. Many farm laborers WANT to be paid under the table and in cash preferably and they all make well above minimum wage.

It seem to matter not whether they have a job or not, the current generation of young Americans (regardless of race) are too lazy and too entitled to even consider doing manual labor and certainly not in a field under a hot sun. They consider it beneath them. I know of what I speak.

A family of four could spend the morning picking and the afternoon freezing and canning berries. Maybe do that twice in a season and have enough frozen berries, jam and syrup for the year. Homemade jam and syrup make for nice presents too.

When I was a kid I had an aunt who would pick the wild blackberries on her Iowa farm then mash and strain them and send us a quart of blackberry juice to CO. That was such a treat and thanks to your story I now appreciate the work she did.

A guest worker program seems in order at least so that we can ween our farms off the illegal labor and into mechanization of their farms.

Americans may not be willing to do backbreaking work picking berries but they are willing to do higher payed technical work of maintaining and driving maintaining.

don’t care about Gary Paulk’s berries. I don’t care about what this will or won’t do to the price of berries.

I care about the law.
I care about public safety.
I care about overcrowded schools.
I care about overcrowded ERs.
I care about property values.
I care about the future of my country.

I can choose to live without berries or pay extra if I want them.

I am being forced to pay for and live with Illegal Immigrants.

And I’m F’g TIRED of people telling me all the reasons why I have to

The soluion is simple.

Go to Atlanta, wave a lot of little bag at the crackheads. Haul them to the fields, pick the berries and then instead of paying in crack, give them money

I wonder if he has tried advertising a “pick your own” approach.

That can be successful but it depends on the location and the crop. IF the farmer is very near a metropolitan area and IF the crop is not fragile it can work. But you've got to have a LOT of insurance, plus parking, porta-pottys and LOTS of supervision to make sure the "customer" doesn't destroy more than he picks and pays for. Most farmers have found it's more work than it's worth.

Please see my post on farm labor further down the thread.

And it's for sure you're not a farmer with a crop in the field that requires handpicking.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Had farmers been required to use legal American labor (instead of pirated illegal Mexicans) and pay honest free market wages (the wage level that brings legal labor into the market) they would not of had "handpicking" for very long. Someone would have invented mechanical pickers that would have saved and reduced the legal picking costs.

The key is that American business and farmers have gotten away with using pirated labor to save on their costs for years, while Congress makes laws that fine at $250K each those who pirate DVDs from Hollywood to save on their costs. Sounds like a double standard to me to screw average Americans who work while protecting the media elite.

Bingo! We have a winner.

Since slave labor is out, berry farmers might consider it’s time to modernize and develop berry picking machines! You’ll need fewer pickers, but you’ll need smarter people to run and maintain the equipment. Production will go up, but you’ll have to pay realistic wages to Americans.

Perhaps if you paid a decent wage you would get Americans to pick your crops. You want to pay illegals a low wage to keep your overhead down instead. I’m willing to pay more in the store for crops raised, picked, and packaged by Americans.

You've hired a lot of manual laborers to work in your fields, have you? With all due respect, please see my post to Racer1 further down the thread.

Of course, legal workers would expect the legal minimum wage. But paying that would be too burdensome.

Tried to hire anybody (legal or not) to do manual labor in your fields, have you? Please see my post to Racer1 further down the thread.
