Despite the near-death experience, the woman was sufficiently aware to protest. "I didn't drown," she told the technicians. "You don't need to take me in the ambulance. I can't afford it." The article is mostly drivel. But it makes a good point on cost of health care in this country. My cousin fainted. The ambulance came, and took him to the hospital even though he said he was fine. He was fine. But the bills for the overnight stay and related amount to $13,000 so far. He is a disabled Vietnam veteran with no job, no health insurance, and very little money. They will take what little he has.

It does piss me off knowing all providers will give a huge discount to insurance companies but want full price from those who pay cash. Not exactly. They give huge discounts to people for just having insurance. Even if the service provided is paid out of pocket by the patient. I had shoulder surgery that didn't reach my annual deductible and the insurance company paid little or nothing. Still, the procedure cost me half what it would have, had I not had an insurance company to tell the doctors and clinic what the right price was.

Get government and lawyers out of health care across the board and it would be inexpensive.
As with all government the more you apply the more it takes to fix what was previously applied...
A big governments dream...

Canadians did a Hell of a job in both World Wars and Korea. But paying for nationalized healthcare (like Europe) has left them in a weakened position vis a vis national defense, or am I wrong? I'm not anti-Canadian.

And if Peter Jennings had not assumed room temperature, he would be saying that the voters had another temper tantrum when 2012 rolls around.

Paying for national health care has left us in a weakened position on more than defense, and I am not trying to defend the article in any way. I am simply saying that this article , or maybe your first comment on it, seems to paint all Canadians with the same brush. As if I posted an article by Michael Moore as being reflective of ‘those Americans’.

2DV, this guy is one of your average America hating leftist Americans. He is not one of ours. He is one of yours. If he wasn't writing for the Montreal Gazette, he might be writing for the New York Times. You can have him back.
Most Canadians would not advise the US on how to order their society in terms of firearms control or medical insurance. That's your business. Most Canadians, like this clown, don't realize that one of the reasons Canada can afford government medical insurance is that the US would never allow Canada to be invaded by a foreign power. Saves us a lot on defense spending.
I don't read the Montreal Gazette and thanks for your service in defense of freedom.

If anything, most of the problems come from the fact that the government is not doing enough to take care of its people ....Dear God man...this is exactly NOT the problem!

“They are overwhelmingly white, well-fed (often too much so) well-scrubbed and clearly well off, at least by the standards of most of the planet. They aren’t likely to get shot by teenage militia tomorrow, or to be dragged off to jail for years without benefit of trial, or to face a 10-mile morning hike for fresh drinking water.”
There’s a problem with this?? Really?
Only a lib could write this illogical garbage. Only a traitorous lefty coward would lament our success. He tries to belittle our fight to reestablish the character and freedoms that made us the envy of the world. What a sap.

Your disabled veteran friend should have them bill the VA.
That normally gets the collectors going after someone else.

The minute the author started ragging on Rubert Murdock and then went on to say that Obama “crossed the aisle”, I skipped the article to post.
Total trash!

Im surprised Canadian will allow cowardly, treasonous b@stards to become citizens.Uh!? Take a look at some of our states. Massachusetts for example. They let a drunken slob that left a young woman to suffocate in his car go without justice and let him represent them in the U.S. Senate for over three decades. They elected and reelect, to the U.S. House, a pervert that led our Country to financial ruin.
Take a look at Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn and the things they did. The U.S. did not put them in jail or deport their sorry a$$es. They were given jobs as university professors, teaching the kids that are today's liberal leaders.
Take another look at our 'blue states and cities'. Do you see anything more responsible than allowing a deserter from another country to apply for citizenship.
Canada is no more screwed up than the U.S. or Europe.
