Former senator says Vargas should stay in U.S.
Former U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) said Sunday that Jose Antonio Vargas, the former Washington Post reporter who came out last month as an illegal immigrant, should be allowed to "become an American."
"It's a difficult problem, and what we need to do is find a way in which Jose can continue to contribute to this country," Martinez said on ABC's "This Week."
"He wants to be an American," Martinez continued. "This is a great thing. This is the Fourth of July. We need to talk about the fact that this is a country people still yearn to come to. People love this country and when they come here, they get invested in America. They want to become Americans.
"Allow this man to become an American," he said.
Martinez, a Cuban immigrant, spent his time in the Senate pushing for a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would provide a pathway to citizenship for the country's 11 million undocumented immigrants. But he said Sunday that Congress could move forward on a piecemeal basis, starting first with fixing the visa system for high-skilled workers.

Why didn’t Mel just plug for the 4th to be a national anmesty day instead of what it is supposed to be.
Allowed to stay ? How be we first allow him to be arrested ?As much document fraud as he used, he should be sitting in jail.
Maybe FReeper RacerX1128 could explain to Mister Martinez that there alread IS a 'pathway to citizenship for them, IF they cared enough to avail themselves of it.
Perhaps they don't persue the existing legal channels because they only want to be an American AFTER they get caught?
At best it’s a 70/30 proposition that favors Democrats. How can people not see the numbers? Obamao understands.
Note: Marco Rubio was originally for comprehensive immigration reform, code phrase for amnesty, until he found out it would not fly with the conservative wing of the Republican party. Don’t be fooled he will push for it if placed in a position of power.
