Dick Armey: On Rick Perry
CNBC interview ^ | July 5, 2011 | Lori Ann LaRocco

Posted on 07/05/2011 1:09:41 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

LL: Out of all the GOP Presidential candidates right now, do think any of them can be a formidable opponent to President Obama? You have mentioned former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty on Squawk Box that you liked him.

Do you think him backing off of "Obamneycare" was a political misstep? What about Texas Governor Rick Perry? Many GOP supporters tell me the field right now is not exciting and they are waiting for Perry to jump in.

DA: President Obama will be a weak candidate in ’12, running for reelection in the weakest economy since the Great Depression; but his coalition will be determined to hold on to power. The strongest candidate for the Republicans will be someone who provides a bold, principled defender of freedom, economic growth, and limited, constitutional government.

I think Governors Romney and Huntsman, and Speaker Gingrich couldn’t win — because of their support for the health care mandate and energy mandates, for example. Governor Pawley did miss a chance in the debate by not sticking to his "Obamneycare" line. The activists I talk to are interested to learn more about Governor Perry. I live in Texas, and we have a solid economy down here that produces jobs. He's got an opportunity. And so does Governor Christy. You’d be surprised how often his name comes up.

People appreciate how he is a straight shooter and is bold in addressing problems.

-"What state has produced someone you'd trust for national public office?"

I wasn't trying to be flippant with my 'Texas' comment. I meant it with all sincerity. If I have 'offended' anyone, it was not my intention. I only stated that because politicos from Texas seem to be too-beholden to their neighbors from the south, otherwise known (in correct pronunciation) as MEHICANOS.

You have two Republicans who have been esteemed to be ideal "conservatives" from Texas, GW-II and now Perry, who just can't seem to be able to take a firm conservative position on ILLEGAL immigrants, and that is very worrisome to me. Why? because it affects how committed they act at the Federal level to take on the illegals and the mass-crossings.

I am ready to be convinced otherwise.

-"“Republicans have to get off this goofiness. Ronald Reagan said, ‘Tear down this wall.’ Tom Tancredo said ‘Build that wall.’ Who’s right? America is not a nation that builds walls. America is a nation that opens doors, and we should be that.”

Let me spray some 'equal opportunity' ordinance around on this one.

This is a BS statement from DA.

You tear down a wall that keeps you from getting out (unless you've been incarcerated for a crime). So Reagan had it right.

You build a wall to keep ILLEGAL trespassers OUT if you CANT control your borders. So. it was PAT BUCHANNAN had it right all along, going all the way back to the 1992 primary against BUSH-I.

As for Tancredo, he's nothing more but a populist bigot. He lumps all hispanics in one cesspool. I lost all respect for him when he said "Miami's a filthy, dirty, disgusting, corrupt banana republic."

Dick Armey has always been considered an old-line libertarian of the Ron Paul mode more than as a conservative. As a trained economist he has understood the virtues of small government, but it is naive to be disappointed because he espouses libertarian views on other issues.

There is room in America,” he said

Well no, there is not room in America, unless you think the whole country looks like the Great Fried Empty of West Texas. Maybe the UN could set up shop in Fort Stockton, eh Dick?

I think a women is going to be elected President as a matter of destiny.

I believe in the Old Testament principle of the 40-year seed, and reaping what one sows.

Bill Buckley starts the conservative movement, and four decades later he sees Republicans recapture Congress after a 40-year absence.Then....

Jesse Jackson (and others still alive) build the Civil Rights movement for 4 decades and see the harvest before the die.The tear running down his cheek on election night explains how God makes the inexplicable happen. It was their turn. Soon...

Next I believe a woman (Palin or Clinton)will be elected to fulfill the work done by womens lib activists for nearly 40 years.
I believe BHO got the Peace Prize right away because:
1- God takes pleasure in making hypocrites of us all
2- The Devine hand will bring the downfall of the arrogant Obama Administration. I prophesy to friends that this is (somehow) going to happen. The Inauguration was the high point, and now we are witnessing the long slow slide downhill. I'm guessing a situation worse than Carter in 1980 with Kennedy's challenge- maybe a Nixononian stumble. I doubt he'll even be a candidate in 2012. imho

The Bible promises us that at the end of every age God allows things to get really bad. We begin to yearn for Him. Then, restoration and the accountability of our leaders will return. This happened in the early 1980’s with the end of the recession and the ABSCAM scandel. Those to whom God has given the torch of leadership must be humbled from time to time. But once again His people will rediscover their lost prosperity.

This is what I believe. I think we are weeks! away from something historical or infamous bringing down this putrid administration. I'm uncertain how, it could be a scandal or economic bad news,or a personal betrayal. Stay tuned. In 1996, when Clinton was celebarating his re-election and most of my friends were weeping, I told them that Clinton would be Impeached (the first in more than a century). They scoffed at the time. :) Regards.

You are alive and well because of W’s prosecution of the war with Al Queda

Your backbiting is inexcusable. Your sour grapes will choke you.

One wonders if you are a trollish Rat
*******
Didn’t mean to provoke you. You seem pretty angry.

I thought GWB didn’t have to forfeit domestic policy (btw:just like his dad did with george mitchell) just because he had to fight a war.
I expected better.

Nope, I'm dissappointed in all fake conservative big 'L' libertarians whether I'm knowledgeable about their political leanings or not.

You can't call yourself a conservative if you eschew limited government issues, secure borders, social conservative issues or a strong military.

You're only partially a conservative, and that is what counts.

“......Armey said “this is a nation of immigrants” and “if you love America, love freedom” and if you will work and pay taxes, you should be welcome in the country.

Are we to believe that all immigrants are good for our country???? They didn't think so in the late 1800's and early 1900's - they sent a lot of them back to their home country when they reached Ellis Island.

My personal belief is that we have left the gate open long enough and should firmly close it.....especially to Obama's fellow Muslims who want to tear our country down.

We all have the personal right to be compassionate, but we don't have the right to be compassionate when the result is a tax increase on our native citizens. The government doesn't have the right or responsibility to be "Compassionate".

Hi Retired COB. I just complied some history on Perry (keep getting that "Karl Rove" is Rick Perry's brain trust bs). Hope this will be helpful.

["Perry was part of the "Pit Bulls", a group of Appropriations members who sat on the lower dais in the committee room (or "pit") who pushed for austere [Texas] state budgets during the 1980s."] Source

Karl Rove claims Rick Perry as his candidate in Perry's FIRST campaign for the Texas Agriculture Commission. [From what I’ve found this was their only collaboration]

Perry was a Texas Democrat (not a liberal Democrat). He switched to the Republican Party in 1989. In 1990 Perry won the election (against Jim Hightower) to head the Agricultural Committee (a post Perry was well suited for as having come from a cotton farming family -- raised and worked the land -- and had a degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M). He was reelected in 1994 to that office in a landslide (62%). He did not seek reelection for a 3rd term and ran for Lt. Gov of Texas (1998), winning in a 3 way race, in a hard fought campaign against John Sharp (D).

["Perry thus became the state's first Republican lieutenant governor since Reconstruction, taking office on January 19, 1999 until his ascension to the governorship on December 21, 2000 upon the resignation of then-Governor George W. Bush."] Source

In that 1998 campaign year, the G.W. Bush camp (which included Karl Rove) was campaigning for W's reelection for Texas Gov (1st elected in 1994) and was at odds with Rick Perry's hard nosed campaign against John Sharp for Lt. Gov. Karl Rove told Perry to soft peddle to lift Bush's numbers in minority groups, Perry refused. Bush won reelection as Texas Governor. Perry won office as Lt. Gov. (arguably a stronger office than TX governor).

["Bush won by 1.4 million votes, Perry by fewer than 70,000. There were harsh words afterward; Rove and Dave Carney, a top Perry strategist, now are bitter foes."] Source

Then there was this in the TX Monthly about the 2010 governor's race:

October 2009: “....It would not be surprising to find that Karl Rove had a hand in this somewhere. The Bushies are definitely in the Hutchison camp, and there is no love lost between them and the Perry camp. The tension (according to Perry team members whom I interviewed on this subject last year) dates all the way back to Perry’s race for lieutenant governor in 1998, when Rove insisted that Perry stick with a positive message even while he was being pounded by John Sharp. Meanwhile, in the view of the Perry camp, Rove was trying to turn out Hispanic Democrats who would vote for Bush, even though that meant they were likely to switch back to the D column to vote for Sharp. The Perry team decided that they had to fight back, Rove or no Rove, and they went rogue, going after Sharp hard. It worked.

...If that animosity weren’t enough, after Bush was named the winner in December 2000, Perry was insistent that the president-elect vacate the governor’s mansion so that Perry could move in, notwithstanding that Bush wanted to stay a day or two longer before leaving for Washington. I heard that firsthand from the Bushies at the time....” -- Texas Monthly

********

Basically, in the 2010 GOP primary in TX for the governor's office, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutichison was hoping to come home to Texas as Governor. Her election was being backed by the Bush family and all their power players were lined up against Gov. Rick Perry, with Karl Rove serving as Sen Hutchison's adviser against Perry. Source

Rick Perry won a 3rd term as Governor of Texas in 2010.
