A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off New Zealand's Kermadec Islands, triggering a tsunami in the region, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Center said on Wednesday.
The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.9, triggered a tsunami warning for New Zealand, the Kermadec Islands and Tonga, the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Center said.
"Sea level readings confirm that a tsunami was generated. This tsunami may have been destructive along coastlines of the region near the earthquake epicenter," the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Center said in its warning.
It struck at 7:03 a.m. on Thursday (1903 GMT on Wednesday) at the epicenter, 131 miles (211 km) east of Raoul Island, part of the Kermadec archipelago, and was only 30 miles (48 km) deep, the USGS said.
The Pacific Tsunami Center said waves were 2.2-2.7 feet (68-84 cm) high around Raoul Island.
The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Center said it estimated that waves would reach East Cape in New Zealand within two hours and Auckland within three hours of the quake.
The Kermadec Islands, which are New Zealand's northernmost inhabited islands, are 500 miles (800 km) northeast of New Zealand's North Island.

AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.
NO TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS FOR OTHER COASTAL AREAS IN THE PACIFIC
ALTHOUGH SOME OTHER AREAS MAY EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA LEVEL CHANGES.
THE TSUNAMI WARNING IS NOW CANCELLED FOR ALL AREAS COVERED BY
THIS CENTER.

Yikes — we have learned in the last years what a tsunami looks like.
It isn’t a massive Hawaii 5.0 type wave — it is a long wave that just has mass behind it more than height.

fwdude, you are one sick puppy for wanting an entire US city destroyed, along with all of its inhabitants. My grandfather, god rest his soul, had a hand in building both the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges. Golden Gate Park itself is a beauty to behold. Granted, Playland is gone as well as Sutro Baths, but the city, despite its politics and some of its dwellers, is a beautiful place.
I can only think that you live in a somewhat desolate and foreboding scratch of earth, jealous with envy at the bright lights of Bagdhad by the Bay as Mr. Cain used to call it. It is a real pity fwdude, that you think so low of fellow americans,and a great city, that you wish their death and destruction. Politically and culturally, San Francisco and I do not agree and perhaps never will. But that is the nature of a free country. I can choose not to go there, or spend my dollars there, but it is beyond the pale to wish its utter destruction.

God destroyed the whole of the earth in a flood, including children, because of rampant iniquity. SF is, in my opinion, bordering on this level. He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, including children, because of their violent evil. SF definitely meets this description.
BTW, God in his judgment is perfectly able to protect innocents in the midst of a cataclysmic event. I wasn’t thinking about killing children because God wasn’t.
