Australian unemployment held steady at 4.9 percent for a fourth straight month in June, data showed Thursday, with jobs growth firming more strongly than expected.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said there were 23,400 more people in work last month, greater than the 15,000 expected by the market, with a marked improvement in full-time work.

"This increase saw full-time employment reach a total of 8,082,100 people in June," the ABS said.

A total 11,455,200 Australians were in work, according to the ABS, with unemployment steady at a two-year low of 4.9 percent, a rate considered commensurate with full employment.

They are heavily socialized, but have fiscal responsibility. Glad there is good news somewhere in the world.

“They are heavily socialized, but have fiscal responsibility.”

I’ll say it, I know it’s blasphemy here, but SOME socialism isn’t a bad thing. The social safety nets we often speak of, are good things. It when safety nets are twisted and inflated to form a way of life that the whole thing falls apart.

Fiscal responsibility is key.

The original 13 colonies had some socialism on the local level. Local taxes went to caring for the poor.

Nothing wrong with that.

It’s when the Federal Govt creates life-long entitlement programs, and encourages people to get on it in order to create a dependent class, that we get into problems.

The U.S., U.K. and France are the way NOT to do it. They have created welfare states.

Sweden is very socialist, but it is also a very homogenous, cohesive nation. And they don’t punish and exploit businesses like the American govt.

They haven’t caved into the green lobby about developing their natural resources. Mining is hugely important there. The current PM is trying to push an unpopular carbon tax. Polls are showing that the voters will throw her party out of power next election and a new PM will be elected.

I don't think that, by world standards, they're all that heavily-socialized. They do have socialized healthcare, but their economic freedom is very high.

Of course, their Labor government is trying to impose a carbon tax which will devastate their industrial base, so this discussion may soon be academic.

I just did a business deal in Canada and when it closed their dollar was worth $1.03 US.

That is shocking. The Canadian Dollar has been around 75-80 cents for most of my adult life. The Australian Dollar has been as low as fifty cents.

Huh? Socialism does not work. Eventually, they will have the same problems as every other socialized system.

Socialism is also immoral. How is it compassionate or moral to force one person to labor for the benefit of another? That is the definition of slavery. Charity and compassion are voluntary; not forced by the government.
