Possible eruption in Katla
RUV ^ | 07/11/11 | staff

A glacial flood from volcano Katla, in Mýrdalsjökull, has disrupted highway no.1 (the ring road), by river Múlakvísl on Mýrdalssandur, in the South of Iceland. The road is closed between Höfðabrekka, east of Vík, and river Skálm, near Álftaver. The flood is thought be the result of a small eruption underneath the icecap of Mýrdalsjökull, probably in the Katla crater. The Civil Protection and Emergency Management has sent out a warning to people in the area, to beware of sulphurate smell near the river, as it might be poisonous sulphurate gas.

This could be very scary because if Katla erupts, we’re talking an eruption on the scale of Mt. Pinatubo in terms of volcanic ash output—probably even more. Not only would it interrupt air travel in all of Europe, but it would cause substantial cooling of the Northern Hemisphere, which means more severe winters (e.g., California could experience another winter of way over average precipitation and Europe could get really snowed in).

Certainly has that capability, however inflation in the area is not all that indicative of a major massing of magma. However things are certainly extremely active in Iceland these past few years and it does warrant an eye.

Yep! I used to love the stories my 4th grade teacher told about his WWII exploits in that area. First time I’d ever heard of Pompeii was of his eye witness accounts - or so it seemed.
