“Washington said it stood firm in its belief that the Libyan leader cannot stay in power.”
That would blemish the stealth jihad called the “Arab Spring”. How was it again that the Nobel Peace Prize went to lil’ hoodlum Xerxes?

European oil companies saw the revolutions sweeping across northern Africa this spring as inevitably removing Gaddafi, so they wanted to use our and the European militaries to get that done with quickly. Now that Gaddafi's overflow doesn't look inevitable, they want peace quickly with any terms. They really don't care who's in charge or what's happening to the civilians just so long as the oil flows.
I still haven't figured out our interests in it.

President Obama told a bipartisan group of members of Congress today that he expects the U.S. would be actively involved in any military action against Libya for “days, not weeks,” after which he said the U.S. would take more of a supporting role, sources tell ABC News.
The White House meeting with 18 lawmakers came as Obama delivered an ultimatum to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi that he must immediately implement a ceasefire in all parts of Libya and allow international humanitarian assistance, or risk military....yatta...yatta

There are two thing necessary for Obummer to effectively lose the Libyan war, and those are:
1) Libyan oil production is redirected to China for purchase, and
2) Mo holds on to the Libyan gold in the treasury, denying it to the IMF.
If those events occur, Obummer has lost the war.
Additionally, if Qaddafi retains some sort of title and remains in Libya through a negotiated peace of any kind, then Zer0 will be perceived to have lost COMPLETELY, even if Mo gives up the oil income to the Muslim Brotherhood.

You can’t negotiate or ‘talk to’ a madman dictator. Remember Saddam Hussein talked his sons-in-law, who’d challenged him, to return to Iraq with his daughters, all’s cool? He summarily executed them. Does anyone think Qaddafi is any different?
