AIDS: Thirty Years Later
AARP The Magazine ^ | July/August 2011 | Michael Anft

Posted on 07/10/2011 4:27:43 PM PDT by fwdude

It announced itself among the young. Five otherwise healthy men in Los Angeles had been stricken by a rare, debilitating form of pneumonia. Baffled doctors reported the news in June of 1981, and, soon after, other scientists revealed a medical mystery of their own: young men with a skin cancer usually found among the elderly.

Within 18 months, the federal government linked the afflictions to a new disease that it named "acquired immune deficiency syndrome," or AIDS. By 1983, when scientists isolated the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as the cause, 1,300 Americans had died — most of them under 40. Thirty years on, though, AIDS is increasingly a disease of older people, who make up the fastest-growing segment of the HIV-positive population.

I remember watching the “film” adaptation on HBO, and came away from it with the distinct message that the “filmmakers” wanted to make Ronald Reagan and the Republicans invented the AIDS epidemic.

It was leftist propaganda on steroids.

Westward Ho, you sound like a good mom, you love your son but are seeing him clearly.

Hope he comes around. You have my sympathy.

Duesberg was right. But there’s too many $$$$ involved to admit the obvious.

I agree, to the extent that I'm able to understand it. If I had a blood test right now and was told I had HIV, I'd do ... absolutely nothing different than I'm doing right now.

AIDS is increasingly a disease of older people, who make up the fastest-growing segment of the HIV-positive population.

This means that older people, like women once were, have been relatively free from AIDS.

The Death Panels will deny cancer treatments as “not cost effective”, but will not DARE limit access to AIDS treatments, no matter how costly.

Exactly, the MSM is already setting the stage.......

Well, it just means that those with AIDS who have managed to stay alive through medication are maturing into this age range. But I don’t believe life is just hunky dorey for them as these and other propagandists depict. The treatment, for whom it works, still doesn’t result in a disease-free life and will always be a ball-and-chain through the duration of their shortened life. And the side affects can be debilitating in their own right.

God Bless you. I can only imagine the pain you feel. I have a nephew, in the same position. He turned away from the life for a while, but after his father died (his mother had died a few years earlier), he went right back to his chosen lifestyle, and, unfortunately, blames everyone else in the family for the problems he created all by himself.

Patient Zero Biography

Term used to refer to the individual who first introduced the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) — the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a fatal transmissible disease of the immune system — into the United States.

The first cases of AIDS were identified in 1981 in Los Angeles, California; HIV itself was isolated in 1983. Most of the early victims of AIDS in the United States were either homosexual men (who generally contracted HIV through sexual contact) or intravenous drug users (who contracted the virus through sharing infected hypodermic needles). Ensuing research revealed that HIV is contracted mostly through exposure to contaminated bodily fluids, such as blood, semen and other genital secretions, and breast milk. As of 1996, AIDS had killed six million people worldwide, and it was estimated that 750,000 individuals in the U.S. and 23 million worldwide were infected with HIV. Presently, the main method of HIV transmission is heterosexual intercourse, which accounts for 70 percent of cases worldwide.

Early research into the AIDS epidemic rested on the assumption that a few people, possibly a single individual, had unwittingly brought the virus into North America. As the homosexual community was the first large group in North America to be affected by the disease (it was at first mistakenly dubbed the “gay cancer”), researchers at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta found a probable candidate within that community — one man who could be connected, through his sexual liaisons and those of his various lovers, to 41 of the first 248 cases of AIDS identified in the United States. The CDC referred to this man as “Patient Zero.”

In his book about the AIDS epidemic, And the Band Played On (1987), the journalist Randy Shilts identified Patient Zero as a French-Canadian airline steward named Gaetan Dugas. Officials of the CDC subsequently confirmed Shilts’ identification. According to their research, Dugas developed Kaposi’s sarcoma, a rare form of skin cancer often seen in AIDS victims, in June 1980. He later had intercourse with “by his own estimate” 250 partners a year until his death in 1984. The CDC linked Dugas with nine of the first 19 cases in Los Angeles as well as the first two cases in New York City and 41 cases in all. From the beginning, the CDC’s Patient Zero theory was extremely controversial and questions still remain about its viability.

In addition to the physical, psychological, and emotional devastation of HIV/AIDS is the high cost of treatment. The wholesale cost for the combination drug therapies treating HIV is about $14,000 annually per patient. (Medication costs can be much higher depending on the drugs included in the regimen.) A study completed in 2002 estimated that costs treating patients who had progressed to an AIDS disease were around $34,000 annually per patient. [14] Variations in this approximation include medications, hospitalization, diagnostic costs and clinic costs. The health care costs of AIDS diseases and drugs for treating HIV have impacted your health insurance premiums tremendously. The direct costs of HIV/AIDS are similar to other very serious illnesses; however, the indirect costs are higher since HIV affects predominantly working-age persons. [15]

Those graphs are bogus.

The “Exposed thorough hetero contact” numbers should be labeled: “Claimed by patient to be exposed...”

When diligent follow-up is done, men NEVER get it heterosexually, and the women all get it, um, the same way men get it from men.

Honestly, unprotected anal sex from dubious male partners is a terrible risk, and political correctness is silencing that life-saving advice.

Read Michael Fumento’s Myth of Heterosexual AIDS. He told the truth decades ago, and it all came true. He’s also an occasional Freeper, and his book on environmentalism turned me into a conservative.

...unprotected anal sex from dubious male partners is a terrible risk...

Is there really such a thing as "protected" anal sex? Read MassMike's link above for a pharmacist's intelligent take on homosexual perversion. A horrific 13% failure rate for latex condoms to protect against HIV transmission.

I liken "safe sex" to trying to make Russian Roulette "safer" for you by adding about 10 more cylinders to the revolver.

Yes.

It’s like adding 999 cylinders to a Russian Roulette revolver.

It’s why the average gal whose regular sex partner (typically an IV drug abuser) take about two night of passion to become infected if they have anal sex, and about 500-1000 (before which he dies, so she lives) if they don’t.

See the “Padian Berkeley” study.

The “failure rate” of condoms” includes: “I forgot to use one”, and “It broke, but I thought, what the Heck.”

I have had a conversation with a homosexual man who told me point blank that the reason we should spend billions on AIDS research is to that homosexual men can have anal sex without a condom!

But to answer your question, a barrier is a barrier. Whether it keeps the fertile or fatal cells contained is the same.

I was working in a small hospital at the time.. an obviously gay news reader was admitted because he was sick..as I took his history I had no doubt it was AIDS ..it was the first case we had seen.. as I went to report this to the head nurse his doctor was standing near by .. he was furious I had the nerve to even think such a thing.. 3 months later the death notice was in the paper..

I am just personally tired of the strawman argument that the media and other activists have made up about only homosexual men getting HIV. Who really believes that. But the truth is, it is highly disproportional how many of male AIDS cases are through homosexual behavior compared to the general population, when literally it’s only some minute percent of men that are homosexual.

huh?!

A full 72% of NEW AIDS CASES are contracted by 2 - 3% of the population (homosexual men.) What are you talking about?
