GOP Looking for Special Election Upset in Venice Beach
The Blaze ^ | 10 Jul 2011 | Christopher Santarelli

If you thought Scott Brown taking the late Ted Kennedy’s senate seat in Massachusetts was the biggest political upset you would ever see, you could be wrong, as a Republican is making strong strides to represent Venice Beach. Democrats often roll up landslide victories for their candidates in coastal California, especially in the 36th Congressional District, which runs from the famous Venice boardwalk through the beaches south of Los Angeles International Airport.

In a season of turbulent politics, a little-noticed runoff election Tuesday for the House seat vacated by former Democratic Rep. Jane Harman has become unusually competitive.

Supporters for the Democratic candidate, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, are jittery, while Republicans see a potential upset in the making for businessman Craig Huey, who owns marketing and advertising companies and has largely bankrolled his campaign with at least $795,000 in personal funds.

Huey even making it to the ballot is a victory in itself, considering the state’s new “jungle” primary rules where all candidates are placed on a single ballot. On his way to Tuesday’s special election, the Republican Huey had to beat Democrat California Secretary of State Debra Bowen in May’s primary.

Constituents of the district have responded to Huey’s calls to cut federal spending, repeal excessive business regulation and lower taxes. Some have speculated that the real chance of victory in L.A. could signal things to come in 2012. The Sacramento Bee:

“Despite a commanding 18-point registration edge for Democrats in the district, tallies of mail-in ballots suggest a potentially tight finish. Hahn remains the favorite, but the likelihood of a paltry turnout in a mid-summer special election means a small number of votes could swing the result.

Wishful thinking on the part of the GOP.

The Democrat will win the seat.

Agree completely. I work in El Segundo, part of the district. I was in Palos Verdes yesterday, plenty of Huey signs but there is no way he’s going to win.

Setup? BlameStreamMedia predicts a GOP pickup in hopelessly “Blue” nitwit district. DemWit wins election (as was known)... BSM then proclaims country has rejected conservatism and Tea Party... been done before, will be done again.

I’d be surprised if we actually won this, but it could happen. It might just catch the attention of the negotiators in D.C.

In the land of illegal voter fraud, the Banana Republic of California will “elect” another Marxist.

Stoopid question - is Rancho PV in the district? My Dad lives there - and he would be a conservative vote.

I agree. Whoever wins the Democratic primary gets this seat no matter what they do, whether it’s a general election or a special election. Hahn might go straight from Congress to jail if she’s ever convicted of some criminal offense, but she’ll win this election and stay in Congress until she resigns, dies or loses her next primary.

...considering the state’s new “jungle” primary rules...

LOL, you can't make this stuff up.

But seriously, why would a Republican want to represent Venice Beach, and what kind of Republican would he/she/it be?

Huey is a self-made small businessman, a conservative running on a economics platform. The GOP establishment has ignored him so he's put his money where his mouth is.

The press didn't expect him to be in the runoff at all but he came ahead of the recently reelected Secretary of State Debra Bowen (D).

Janice Hahn can't offer anything fresh to the people there and that's a problem.

The Hahn family is a dynasty in L.A. County going back a generation. Her daddy was a councilman for 30+ years, her uncle too and he went to the state assembly. Her brother was City Attorney and then Mayor of L.A. now she's coming from the city council hoping to move into Congress.

I don't know that he can win but anything that scares the hell out of Democrats is a good thing. The upstart Huey shouldn't be anywhere close to someone with the name recognition, union-backing and registration advantage of Janice Hahn.

People have been coming from San Diego County to help out on his campaign, going door-to-door GOTV for early voting.
