TERRE HAUTE A terrible tragedy unfolded on Terre Hautes near-north side Monday afternoon when an officer with the Terre Haute Police Department was killed in the line of duty.
Officer Brent Long, a six-year veteran of the police force, was fatally shot while serving a warrant with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force at 1812 N. Eighth St.
There were several officers making up the task force, including Long, who was accompanied by his trained police dog, K-9 Shadow. The dog was also shot at the scene but reportedly survived, police said.
Long and the other officers were serving a felony warrant for a man who police would later identify as the alleged shooter.
Police said they knew the identity of the shooter, who also died at the scene, but they were not releasing his name as of presstime.
At a news conference Monday night, Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts said the alleged shooter was deceased inside the home and remained inside the home several hours after the shooting.
Shots pretty much immediately rang out against the officers serving the warrant as soon as they entered the rear of the home, Watts told the media. Long sustained gunshot wounds at the scene, said Watts, who declined to give specifics on the officers wounds, pending results from the ongoing investigation.
Long was taken to Union Hospital, which is a few blocks to the south of where the incident occurred. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

dogs have nine lives too?
Too bad this thread won't get many replies because it highlights the sacrifices made by cops and not their occasional screw-ups. Oh, and the only dog that got shot was a police dog. So no one will really care.
Prayers for this officer and his family and friends.
RIP.
I take remarks like yours with a large grain of salt because I know 100% you would never say it standing in front of me.
My condolences to the officers family.
Anyone understand why you enter the rear of a home to serve a warrant?
I am one of the first to pounce on thugcops, but also one of the first to applaud good officers.
This is a tragedy. Only good thing is that the scumbag got killed, too. (And the K9 survived.)
Do wonder if they could have snatched the scum when he left the house, if the officer was wearing a vest, and about other tactical issues. Seems to me trying to arrest someone in their home is fraught with peril for all involved as we see time and time again.
Prayers for the officer’s family...
“Too bad this thread won’t get many replies because it highlights the sacrifices made by cops”
You can blame that on the actions of all the jackboot wna
be rambo cops. Even the good cops suffer from their actions.
It’s easy to be a jackboot thug but it’s hard to be an honest
police officer and get the credit and respect you deserve.
Prayers for the officer and his family.
“Yes, you idiot newbie.”
When one has nothing to debate, one attacks personally. How progressive of you. :)
Can you please explain what you mean by “Karma”? Thank you.
Oh, so you’d like to DEBATE someone deserving to die? Dumb and dumber.
There is a high chance that when one goes up against a determined armed person. Somebody is going to get hit or killed.
LEO's are very fortgenate that most bad guys do not really want to kill them. If most most bad guys did we would be having a lot more LEO duty deaths.
The bad guys always have the upper hand because they have no rules of engagement.
“Oh, so youd like to DEBATE someone deserving to die?”
Deserving? Nowhere in my posts did I say that. Please be honest.
Maybe you should know what a word means before writing it. Deserving what happens to you is absolutley what karma means.
“Can you please explain what you mean by Karma? Thank you.”
In recent years, way too many police have had an “us versus them” mentality, with “us” being everyone who isn’t a cop.
With that in mind, every once in awhile “them” is going to inflict a casualty.
Are most shootings by cops justified....yes.
Are many shootings by cops not justified.....yes.
Did this particular cop deserve to be shot....I don’t know.
Is it possible Karma paid him a visit...absolutely.
“Deserving what happens to you is absolutley what karma means.”
That is your interpretation of what Karma means.
However, using your definition, it is possible I’m right regardless. :)
You’re the only one sick enough to have used the word karma to describe this incident. So the only one who thinks you would be correct is you. I suppose you’re real sorry the fugitive had to die, though.
