McConnell: Give Obama new powers on debt limit
Breitbart ^ | July 12, 2011 | Andrew Taylor

WASHINGTON (AP) - The top Republican in the Senate proposed on Tuesday giving President Barack Obama sweeping new power to, in effect, unilaterally increase the nation's debt limit to avoid a first-ever default on U.S. obligations. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., offered a new plan to allow the president to demand up to $2.4 trillion in new borrowing authority by the summer of next year in three separate submissions. Those increases in the so-called debt limit would automatically take effect unless both the Republican House and the Democratic Senate enact legislation specifically disapproving it.

Obama would be able to veto such legislation.

The GOP plan would require that Obama submit spending cuts along with his borrowing requests. But unlike the increase in the debt limit, they wouldn't automatically take effect.

The new mechanism would take the place of the White House debt negotiations between congressional leaders and Obama. Those talks over spending cuts and tax increases have grown increasingly acrimonious.

This precise issue (where a non-member of Congress makes cuts) was litigated with regards with Graham-Rudman-Hollings, also. That portion of that legislation was deemed unconstitutional.

Before you knee-jerks get your panties in a twist, think about McConnels plan: It dumps the whole issue in Obama's lap. The media can't blame the Republicans. The Demos can't blame the Repubs.

That might work, if the Dems were rational, and the MSM didn't provide them cover 24-7. The Dems will still blame the GOP, the MSM will report it, and the Dem throngs will continue apace, and the budget will continue to explode with this "good strategic idea". No benefit for the country, but yes, clever.

Nice Kurosawa reference.

How about that scene where he walks away from the burning castle? Pretty creepy.....

“...[S]omething like this would probably trigger either the Second Civil War or the Fourth World War - take your pick.”

No reason to not have both.

Unbelievable!

McConnell blinks and Obama gets the win.

Pubbies: Still pulling defeat out of the jaws of victory, while not even breaking a sweat.

If True ? Good-Bye GOP and Hello Tea Party Candidates. But also Good-Bye to any Chance to Beat The “ O “ in 2012. Once again Politicians are more concerned about their Power, than the Country.

Oooh! Thanks for the reminder. Back in a bit . . .

It is like giving the space shuttle keys to my 87 year old Aunt Doris. Just watch what happens. It ain’t gonna be pretty. I bet Obama, when he heard this, soiled his drawers. That’s a good thing

Nothing like ceding even more legislative power to the Executive Branch. I mean hell... it’s only the Constitution. The spineless idiots in the GOP fail to realize that even if they held no House or Senate seats, they’d still be blamed for all the nation’s woes by the Rats and MSM and the sheeple will believe it.

I sincerely doubt there is anything more to this than exactly what it purports itself to be. A complete and utter CAVE.

This proposal looks a lot like Project Fast and Furious, with the GOP providing weapons to the lawless Democrats, hoping that somehow something good will come out of it.

Can you tell me where to find... where to find a real opposition party??

There is none! The DC establishment are two wings of the same bird of prey.

I didn’t forget it so much, as didn’t pick up on the reference. I didn’t say I was Republican at the time, just that I was old enough to vote then, though not old enough to worry greatly about the details of Federal program funding. I was still having trouble funding my own life.

This mess 0 has created is far too serious to be playing STUPID POLITICAL GAMES. I’ve seen the plan explained. It’s CRAP.

It’s a cowards way out using inside DC gobbldygook language in which, as history proves, the GOP and conservatives get DUPED again by Dems.

You can’t negotiate with liars and Mitch and Crybaby are stupid to even try.

It’s much simpler: DO NOTHING! The Constitution requires paying the interest on the debt ($20 billion a month) if we reach the ceiling and then cut, cut, cut, cut. No more borrowing period.

Take it or leave it. Let him lie about Social Security checks to scare idiots. Ain’t gonna happen and everyone knows it since that’s just another $25-30 billion a month and we currently have close to $200 billion a month coming in even with this crappy economy.

If your first Presidential Election was 1972 the odds are very good you were not worried about any of the issues.

Yup Yup Yup

The Republicans remember ~ the Democrats do too.

You'd best believe everybody's going back to the court cases and what led up to them, and what the details of the legislation were.

If Mark didn't talk about Nixon that means he doesn't know beans about this particular issue.

If he called G. Gordon Liddy he's on top of it!

I don't think the Dems will go for this. It's obviously a trap for Obama going into 2012. He'll have to take responsibility both for which of his "sacred cows" get cut (dollar-for-dollar) and for debt going up.

It's an interesting idea. I'm sure there's a downside besides all the people who see this as a cave in.

The media can't blame the Republicans. The Demos can't blame the Repubs.

Oh sure, they just give Obongo all the power and then they disclaim all the responsibility, victory through weakness!...

...except they forgot one little thing, they are responsible for giving him all the power! Too clever by half!

Neville Chamberlain could not come up with a better plan.

"My good friends, this is the 75th time in our history that there has come back from the Debt Ceiling to the White House peas with honor. I believe it is peas for our time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And now I recommend you to go home and sleep quietly in your beds."
