One of the posters in that site said this which I found interesting :
I used to travel with some frequency to both Californias, north and south. I quickly found that they are two very different places.
The NoCals looked down on the SoCals as a bunch of knuckle-dragging troglodytes, nasty Reaganites.
The SoCals looked down on the NoCals as a bunch of granola eating-birkenstock wearing hippies.
Both were correct (to a certain extent). They are at least as different in character as, say, the United States and Canada.
It makes sense that they become their own states.

...but I wonder how many Republicans will dream of taking 22 electoral votes out of the Democrats column in presidential races and into the GOP one. That would virtually guarantee the others to be Dems Electoral votes. As it is, it can swing in the other direction, at least possibly. ........

Never happen.
California needs their tax money too badly.

Of course it will never happen. It was already being proposed and widely spoken of when I moved away from the San Diego area over 30 years ago. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the same discussion has been happening for decades about Eastern Washington splitting off from Western Washington for exactly the same reasons. I guess maybe someday all the sane people will be living in Texas, causing Rep Hank Johnson to worry that, like Guam, Texas may tip over and capsize.

This is a really good idea but would take a unique set of circumstances for it to happen. It would take a GOP take over of the state govt and a GOP takeover of the federal govt and then it would require that those in power at the state level be willing to allow this to go forward which would certainly doom their own positions at least in the context of California govt at the time of the partitioning. I wonder if such a thing could be accomplished through proposition.

For the country as a whole this is a great idea. The only problem is that I live in the Bay Area, so I would end up in a state that is 80% Democrat.

Uhhhh, you know that San Diego used to home port the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet, right? One of the best natural harbors in the world that is perfectly capable of handling several aircraft carriers can certainly work for a shipping port.

The last time one state was carved out of another was in the establishment of West Virginia, and it took a Civil War to accomplish that split. The only way a split of California could conceivably happen is if you simultaneously split Arizona to allow the Democratic leaning southern area to form another state. This action would re-enact the antebellum admission to statehood where a slave state and a free state would simultaneously be admitted into the Union. Washington, New York, Florida, Texas, and Illinois would serve as strong potential candidates for liberal-conservative splits.

Does a higher percentage number really change the status quo? Somewhat. The Dems are still short of a 2/3 majority in the state legislature, meaning the Republicans can block tax increases.

You can always move down here to South Cal and enjoy more like-minded neighbors and friends.
To: RockinRight
port issue is simple ... Long Beach moves to adjoining Orange County (which I wish would happen anyway) and takes its port with it.
