Federal government takes state to court over voter registration dispute

A federal lawsuit accusing two state agencies of failing to provide adequate voter registration services for people who get food stamps, disability payments and Medicaid will be fought in court, the state's chief elections officer said Tuesday.

The lawsuit alleges that agency offices that grant public assistance have failed to regularly ask clients if they want to register to vote and give them forms to register.

Roughly 1.1 percent of voter registrations, about 6,000, were received from public assistance offices, in 2009-10, according to the lawsuit, a 10-year low.

(Tom) Schedler,(Secretary of State ), said his office has asked the Justice Department for more details of the alleged noncompliance but was not given any. He said that instead, the Justice Department asked the state to sign a consent agreement conceding the allegation and setting out a way to address the problem. The state has refused to do so, he said.

"We don't know what we are fighting," he said. "Show us what the allegations are."

The problem is that you’re not giving them enough extra names for the level of cheating they need in the next election, Tom.

I don’t remember anyone ever coming around to ask me if I wanted to vote, with a form around for me to sign.

Maybe that’s because I’m not a Dem on the dole. I thought ACORN, or whatever they call themselves now, was already doing this work.

Crooked bastards. It is the only way they can win. Illegals, welfare bums, union extortionists, academia, and the rest of the half of the country that pays no income taxes.

Obama MUST buy the election. He cannot WIN the election on issues or performance.

It's preposterous that state agencies giving out public assistance have to get a certain number of recipients to register to vote, or else get sued by the Obamatons.

Contrary to the Louisiana Secretary of State's statement, it's obvious what this is all about: the 'Rat Administration in DC - specifically, Holder's (In)Justice Dept. - is trying to force the state GOP administration to engage in a partisan 'Rat voter registration initiative. It used to be, only a few years ago, that ACORN and related groups did the bulk of this dirty work; now the state governments, even if they don't want to, are being forced into it.

great points!
doesn’t this in fact violate voter discrimination laws in the other direction?

just as handing out literature there for one religion would.
this is favoring one set of voters.
in rreality, the DOJ should be taking the Federal Agencies to court, for doing this.

I think that you should LOSE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE YOURSELF MORE MONEY once you go onto the public dole

Government employees too

It’s a serious conflict of interest

That’s because you live in a yankee state. The South is still being punished for past transgressions.

VOTE-CRAZED OHAHA IS ON HIS KNEES, ALL PUCKERED UP,
REVVING UP ILLEGALS "TO VOTE AGAINST THEIR ENEMIES"

Ohaha issues Excecutive Order:

(1) declares all illegals are undocumented Democrats;

(2) orders the start of massive flow of latinos into the US for 2012 elections;

(3) orders ICE to the border to handout Dem voter registration forms;

(4) DHS distributing Social Security and SSI apps for multiple identities,
welfare forms, food stamps, EITC apps, lists of free healthcare providers,
drivers' licenses, passports, sub-prime mortgage apps,
bank accounts for every identity, and gun and machete permits;

(5) Ohaha lists Dem campaign committees taking donations from drug lords.

(6) Mexico, Central and South America ready to assist Ohaha (for a price).

Absolutely! Frankly, I had no idea that there was such a federal law, requiring such public agencies to seek to register voters. The idea, actually, seems to violate the spirit--if not the letter--of Article I, Sec. 2, of the Federal Constitution, which would authorize the State to disenfranchise those on the public dole.

That we really do need to begin to limit the suffrage to those who do not have an obvious conflict of interest, see Universal Suffrage--Threat To Liberty.

Anyway you slice it, we are approaching an agonizing showdown with the enemies of our most basic values. Eternal vigilance is more essential than ever.

I had no idea that there was such a federal law, requiring such public agencies to register voters.

It seems to be a sequel to the horrendous Motor Voter law of 1993, which was the very first law that Clinton signed. Once the camel got his nose under the tent with "Motor Voter," other types of state agencies were pushed around. These obnoxious laws may have been passed by the Congressional 'Rats in the dead of night, just like Obamacare. That's why it's so difficult to keep up with them.

The idea...seems to violate the spirit - if not the letter - of Article I, Section 2, of the Federal Constitution, which would authorize the State to disenfranchise those on the public dole.

Don't quite get your point there, so please elaborate. Remember that there was no such thing as a public dole at the time of the writing of the Constitution and for a long time thereafter. In so far as I know, states have the constitutional authority to conduct voter registration and any other voting and election procedures in any way they see fit, provided they do not violate the "equal protection" clause of the Fourteenth Amendment nor the Fifteenth (no racial discrimination) nor the Nineteenth (no gender discrimination) nor the Twenty-Fourth (no poll tax) nor Twenty-Sixth (18 years age requirement for voters) Amendments. But subsequent federal legislation has mucked up the picture and opens the gates to more fraud.

My point with respect to Article I, Sec.2, is that even Federal suffrage depends upon those entitled to vote--in any particular State--for the more popular branch of the State Legislature. The States were supposed to define the suffrage, not only for themselves but for the Federal elections as well.

The idea of the Federal Government pushing to increase voting among those dependent upon the Federal Government reflects a very different perception of what is right & proper in America.

In my opinion, we have allowed the Left to push the suffrage extension too far; it being past time to stop people with a clear conflict of interest from being the controlling vote--a factor, incidentally, of profound effect in bringing about the present financial crisis.
