I said as casually as I could “Your toddler is toddling out into the street.”

The mother, rather than running after her child, started screaming at ME “I AM NOT A BAD MOTHER!!!!!”

I replied “irrespective of your skill as a mother, your child IS wandering out into the street.”

I’d have called to the child,”Get on the sidewalk quick”
This would have alerted both the child and it’s parents to the impending danger. Years ago, we would have looked out for our neighbor’s children

If the mother wasn’t right there I might have, but not sure the child was understanding and/or responding to English at that point.

Toddler still had a way to toddle before it was actually OUT in the street, it was just lowering down over the curb when I told the mother.

But as I said, mother was more interested in clearing up any misconception I might have about her skills as a parent than in pulling the child out of the street.

Typical.

If the child were OUT in the street, or likely to be so imminently - I would have pulled the kid out of the street. As it was the mother was going to have PLENTY of time to avert danger - if that was her intent - apparently a secondary consideration to a verbal defense of her stunning parenting skills.

YES!!!! I know that has happened to me before! I forgot all about that when you said that. I was returning the cart and someone was looking at my 2 year old squealing because she (like most 2 year olds) hated her car seat.

I still say if they were unattended, how did the mother see the approaching rescuer.

In hindsight it would have been fitting if you had told the kid that her mother wanted her to play hide-and-seek and she should go hide in the toy department, then go talk to store security about the mother.

Assuming, of course, that the owners of the vehicle don’t get back in at least the forty minutes to two hours the police will take to get there.

Yes, that is a concern...but the very large firetruck arrived very quickly and found the owners. I guess you have to do whatever is necessary to save the kids or pups if someone doesn’t show up soon.

Quite right. I had forgotten that the FD is likely to respond to such a call and would likely respond quickly and with the right tool for the job.

My daughter got to use one on a wrecked beater at a extrication exercise when she was taking her EMT class.
