Stolen Mailboxes Pose ID Theft Risk To Valley Postal Customers

Federal officials launched an investigation on Thursday after four 200-pound mailboxes were stolen in less than a week at multiple San Fernando Valley post offices, potentially leaving postal customers vulnerable to identity theft.

The mailboxes stolen from offices in Pacoima, Glendale and Burbank were bolted into a concrete slab, U.S. Postal Inspector Renee Focht told the Glendale News-Press.

No suspects have been named, but the thefts appeared to be a “recent trend,” Focht said.

Investigators have not confirmed if all the incidences were connected.

Focht advised concerned postal customers to check their credit reports and contact their banks.

All of the mailboxes will be replaced, Richard Maher of the U.S. Postal Service said.

Pacoima, Glendale, Burbank?

Hmm, that's in the Valley, which means it's likely illegals stealing them for scrap metal...

I will never ever be convinced that privatized mail is the answer. I prefer a government military, government education, government police, government post office, and never having my taxes going to support any private enterprise or multi-millionaire CEOs. Some things need control by taxpayers and other by CEOs.

Private enterprise means it should be purely private funding, but the current problem in the USA is that private enterprise has somehow become entrenched with cronies wanting to make money.

We need to as a society to define what needs run by government and what needs run by totally private funding. I will fight to my dying breath if my taxes are sent to private enterprise.

Two hundred pounds of convenient scrap aluminum?

That would be a community mailbox cluster including the pedestal, Alex.

Thankfully, I rarely use the postal service and wish I didn’t have to do anything with it at all. The mail carriers seem to all be illiterate. I had to track down a parcel that had supposedly already been delivered four days before. I keep getting letters addressed to someone else on a different street, even people from other states!

You are amazingly misguided.

Where do you think the funds for a fighter jet go?

Nope, not enough return for scrap and too hard to move, as scrap dealers don’t do Fed mailboxs.

After the first one vanished, somebody ought to have been watching the others in the area like a hawk.

These puppies ought to be cast into the concrete, not just bolted.

I strongly oppose crony capitalism of any kind. Private enterprise should receive only funding and investments from private capitalists seeking to make subsequent profits for their own.

This is why I oppose a private military and private government of anything because it leads to private corruption and beholden politicians.

There is a big difference between procurement of products from private enterprise and privatization of government enterprise and services.

Yep, they can make 600 deliveries in a day, get 599 correct and the one you hear about is the moron who got the one wrong delivery and calls in. And I will assume you and your co-workers never make errors. Great job yup! And by the way, you don’t HAVE to do anything with the USPS. Use someone else.

No, It’s more like clockwork than 1 out of 600. Your “use someone else” line sounds a lot like what the TSA says to people who object to being treated like muslim terrorists whenever they want to fly on an airplane. The USPS only exists now because it has was given a monopoly on first class mail. Outside of that, I certainly do use “someone else” whenever I can (internet, online bill pay, fax machines, cell phones), and I’m not alone. The USPS should have been completely privatized or liquidated years ago because it’s going to find customers abandoning it in droves or dying off.

Privatized mail has been the answer for a long time now. Ever heard of email, text messaging, fax machines, facebook, telephones, UPS, Federal Express, Roadway Package System? The USPS is a fossil.
