67% Oppose Upcoming ‘Ban’ on Traditional Light Bulbs
Rasmussen Reports ^ | July 15, 2011

Posted on 07/15/2011 8:39:52 AM PDT by upchuck

One-in-five Americans (20%) say they or someone they know has bought large quantities of traditional light bulbs to use when those bulbs disappear off store shelves next year under new federal light bulb regulations.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 70% of Adults aren’t doing that themselves or don’t know anyone who is, but another 10% are not sure.

The new government regulations provide for the manufacture of similar-looking bulbs that will last longer and be more energy-efficient – but also more expensive. Critics view the regulations as unnecessary government intrusion in the free market and see them as effectively banning the kind of light bulb Americans have used for decades.

Just 20% of adults think the sale of traditional light bulbs should be banned. Sixty-seven percent (67%) oppose such a ban. Thirteen percent (13%) are undecided.

However, 57% think it is at least somewhat likely that the new light bulbs, while they will cost more up front, will save money in the long run, as the federal Energy Department claims. Thirty-six percent (36%) think long-term savings are unlikely. These findings include 29% who think the savings are Very Likely and just nine percent (9%) who say they are Not At All Likely.

Two years ago, only 18% of adults thought it was the government’s job to tell Americans what kind of light bulb they should use. Seventy-two percent (72%) say it’s none of the government’s business.

Right now the FReepathon banner at the top of this thread says, “We need your help to keep the lights on!!”

I sure a hell hope those lights aren’t CFLs :)

Will the old cartoons, where a light bulb was placed over someone’s head when he/she had an idea, need modification? I mean that could be a hate crime against the environment.

Going across the border into Canada and smuggling them into the US. Reading about Prohibition and what transpired then. I also read where detergent with phosphates are banned in lots of towns. But what of farmers using phosphates for fertilizer?

Maybe in a new house, the CFLs last longer, but in my house built in 1940, they don’t last any longer (old electrical wiring and fuse box). I tried it to save money but it turned into a waste.

I refuse to believe that 33% of the American population has bought into the entire “green” mythology, and is thus willing to let the goverment dictate product availability.

Yes, they were stupid enough to elect the America-hating RaceMarxist, but the whole “environmentalism” lie flies in the face of basic common sense.

Sure our next President, a Republican, will make a list of all the RAT crap and use executive order to repeal. Don’t trust we can take the majority in the Senate, but if so then use the House, Senate, and President and do it rapid fire.

I baited a lefty in a “whole foods” store one day.

I pointed out the CFLs in all the overhead lighting and said “you know they’ve found a great new clean way to generate electricity?”

“Really?”

“Yeah, they’re hooking up generators to the country’s founders as they’re spinning in their graves over the government telling us what lightbulbs we have to use.”

We need to make the light bulb a symbol on par with the tea bag. This is a touchstone issue for liberty. Any Republican who did not vote to repeal needs to be taken out in the next primary.

Been finding those curly fry bulbs do not last longer. I have a few that I put in a couple years ago and they are starting to fail. The savings that I thought I would see is not happening because they are inferior. As I pull them, I'm putting in incandescents. Now, I have to keep a box in a safe place to collect the failing CFCs and not let the mercury go to the dump.

Awesome.

Dennis Miller quality humor, and believe me sir, that is high praise.

Now. What the hell were you doing in a Lefty Food store?

I’m putting you on the FR suspect list.

And most think that the 1.5 gal/flush toilets are junk.

However, the sheeple are pretty ok with taking what they’re given. Our society has been groomed for communism. I’m not sure, but it looks inevitable to me.

In the meantime, I’m stocking up on incandescent bulbs. I’ll continue to use them as a small act of defiance.

Repackage the old 100W Incadescents at “HEAT LAMPS”! They are perfect for keeping small numbers of baby chicks and other animals warm. Also warm in winter when you need to keep a pipe from freezing or a small enclosed space warm.

Yeah, but what does that have to do with anything? (/s)

All 100W “heat Lamps” can come with this warning...

WARNING! IT IS A FEDERAL OFFENSE TO USE THIS “HEAT LAMP” AS A LIGHT SOURCE! ;-D
