House turns off light bulb standards by voice vote
The Politco ^ | July 15, 2011 | DARREN GOODE

The House on Friday morning moved to block federal light bulb efficiency standards without even a roll call vote.

An amendment from Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas) defunding the Energy Department's standards for traditional incandescent light bulbs to be 30 percent more energy efficient starting next year was approved rather anticlimactically by voice vote.

The success of the amendment appeared inevitable in the House, where the fate of the incandescent light bulb became a symbol in the fight against federal regulations.

Democrats and the White House have opposed the move to block the standards, which were included in a 2007 energy bill signed by President George W. Bush. DOE has said the standards could save consumers $6 billion a year.

Since they are still producing 60# and 75# I’m sure one of them can put in a line for 100#.I’d even bet one of the closed factories may start calling worers back to work....

GE was the last manufacturer of conventional light bulbs in the USA.

Somehow, I suspect their politics will preclude re-opening their factories. It will be up to some other manufacturer.

“Democrats are only pro-choice when it comes to killing babies.”

You can say that again.

Oh, unless you also state they are pro-choice whenever it has to do with something immoral. Drugs, sex, etc - all “free & easy”.

We know which one won’t, GE. They are too invested in the green movement.

It is a good first step. The whole progam was stupid to begin with.

It looks like I may not have to start buying real light bulbs on the black market after all.

My husband has a medical condition (so does his sister) that prevents us from using any florescent or LED lights.

How should I clean up a broken fluorescent bulb?

Clean up for incandescent bulbs...

sweep, use dustpan, drop in trash. No problem.

I personally like that the CFL bulbs for energy savings, since they lowered my power bill by about $80 a month when I first got them. (I solved that energy problem by moving to a house with more windows, haha). I also hate, Hate, HATE the heat produced by the incandescents, because I hate sitting under a heat lamp while trying to work.

However, regarding what you said:

“I have fatigue problems under the flicker of fluorescents.”

I remember hearing a blurb on the radio (The John Tesh Radio show’s nightly trivia maybe, it’s been a few years), that said that one hour of exposure to fluorescent lighting, messed up a person’s melatonin and affected sleep for a three hour period, on average, after the exposure ended. I noted it to a lot of my coworkers at the time, who all mentioned that that was how long it took them to finally get to sleep after work. I worked a swing shift, and so we all wanted to go to sleep after work, but often couldn’t. I’ve notived I sleep much better, and much more deeply if I limit my exposure to Fluorescent lighting, but hey, that’s just me.

(As someone else commented, I too used to have problems telling colors apart under the light of CFL’s, but not anymore.)

• The next several times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a window before vacuuming.
• Keep the central heating/air conditioning system shut off and the window open for at least 15 minutes after vacuuming is completed.

This would really suck if you lived in MN and broke one during the middle of winter.

Dang! Now I have to figure out what to do with 1,933 of these evil 40-to-100 watt things that I accumulated over the past few years...

It is called scotopic sensitivity. My husband and Sister in law have it.

He gets migraines, nausea and vomiting if he sits under (or near) florescent lighting. My sister in law has epileptic seizures if she is exposed to florescents for very long.

As a consumer, I'll decide if I want to save MY share of $6 billion a year all on my own you tyrant bass turds!

You've got that right! I prefer the old bulbs. Those new bulbs suck, and if they think I'm going to dispose them anywhere other than in a garbage bag with the rest of the trash, they can think again.

Good news! Keeping their feet to the fire!

I use the squiggly ones, but it's MY choice. They are cooler to use in the house on a hot summer Texas day!

MY choice!

DOE has said the standards could save consumers $6 billion a year.

Eliminate the DOE. Fire all Federal parasites that work at the DOE. How much would that save?

About 30 billion a year

I’ve been buying for over a year. I’m going to stop buying until I see what happens with this bill. I have more than enough bulbs to last decades.

I’ve always been sorry I didn’t buy real toilets before they were outlawed. I figured this was a new chance to make a nice score selling to people who didn’t plan ahead.

I noticed that some of the incadescents are made in Mexico. Will they still sell them along the border to the border states? Can we visit mexico and load up with 100 watt bulbs for illegal shipment to other northern states?

Will the EPA begin border checks for illegal 100W bulb smuggling?

One can almost immagine some EPA SWAT team shooting down some homeowner to confiscate his illegal 100 watt bulbs.
