~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located within the city limits of Goldsboro, North Carolina. The base is named for Navy test pilot Seymour Johnson, a native of Goldsboro. It is home to the 4th Fighter Wing (4 FW) of the Air Combat Command (ACC) and the 916th Air Refueling Wing (916 ARW), an Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) unit operationally gained by the Air Mobility Command (AMC).

Before the United States' entry into World War II, American volunteers were already serving as combat veterans in Royal Air Force Eagle Squadrons (71st, 121st and 133rd). When the United States entered the war, these units, and the American pilots in them, were transferred to the U.S. Army Air Forces, 8th Air Force, forming the 4th Fighter Group on Sept. 12, 1942.

The 4th Fighter Group (with squadrons now designated the 334th, 335th and 336th) was a record setter throughout the air war over Europe, justly earning the motto "Fourth But First."

Reactivated as the 4th Fighter Wing on July 28, 1947, members of the wing have served all over the world, including the Korean War, Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 4th Fighter Wing accomplishes its training and operational missions with 92 F-15E Strike Eagles, assigned to the following squadrons:

333d Fighter Squadron Lancers "Red Fin Flash"
334th Fighter Squadron Eagles "Blue Fin Flash"
335th Fighter Squadron Chiefs "Green Fin Flash"
336th Fighter Squadron Rocketeers "Yellow Fin Flash"

All 4th Fighter Wing F-15Es carry the "SJ" Tailcode.

The 335th and 336th Fighter Squadrons are capable of deploying worldwide on short notice and immediately generating combat power., while the 307th, 333rd and 334th Fighter Squadrons are responsible for training all F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews for the U.S. Air Force.

FReeper Canteen ~ Road Trip: Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina

Good evening, Kathy! Good evening, all!

I cannot think about that air base without thinking of the Tom Clancy book, Every Man a Tiger, a biography of General Chuck Horner (CENTAF during Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield).

I had the book on tape in the car while commuting from Brooklyn to Parsippany and back.
I listened as he told stories of those cocky young pilots.
I listened as he described the heady days in the service.
But when he said that they once again had to go back to see more johnson ... well, I nearly crashed the car off the side of the road!

And on that happy note, I'll tip hat and run off into the night.

Seymore Johnson, I was a Boom Operator there from 1968-1976, then it was the 911th ARS, and the 19th Bomb Wing.

Actually, I have not been to the Carolinas. I’m plotting a trip down to Charleston and Wilmington for sometime next year (possibly the spring). A friend and I were going to go this year, but he had a severe illness in his family and had to use all of his vacation time on that, so we’re delaying it until the next fiscal year.

On the way down, we want to stop by the Congaree National Forest for a few hours before hitting Charleston. There we are going to go to Fort Sumter and Patriots Point (where several museum ships, including the USS Yorktown, are docked - the Medal of Honor Museum is located onboard the retired flattop), plus tour the city.

After Charleston, we are going up the coast to Wilmington to visit the battleship USS North Carolina.
