~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located within the city limits of Goldsboro, North Carolina. The base is named for Navy test pilot Seymour Johnson, a native of Goldsboro. It is home to the 4th Fighter Wing (4 FW) of the Air Combat Command (ACC) and the 916th Air Refueling Wing (916 ARW), an Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) unit operationally gained by the Air Mobility Command (AMC).

Before the United States' entry into World War II, American volunteers were already serving as combat veterans in Royal Air Force Eagle Squadrons (71st, 121st and 133rd). When the United States entered the war, these units, and the American pilots in them, were transferred to the U.S. Army Air Forces, 8th Air Force, forming the 4th Fighter Group on Sept. 12, 1942.

The 4th Fighter Group (with squadrons now designated the 334th, 335th and 336th) was a record setter throughout the air war over Europe, justly earning the motto "Fourth But First."

Reactivated as the 4th Fighter Wing on July 28, 1947, members of the wing have served all over the world, including the Korean War, Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 4th Fighter Wing accomplishes its training and operational missions with 92 F-15E Strike Eagles, assigned to the following squadrons:

333d Fighter Squadron Lancers "Red Fin Flash"
334th Fighter Squadron Eagles "Blue Fin Flash"
335th Fighter Squadron Chiefs "Green Fin Flash"
336th Fighter Squadron Rocketeers "Yellow Fin Flash"

All 4th Fighter Wing F-15Es carry the "SJ" Tailcode.

The 335th and 336th Fighter Squadrons are capable of deploying worldwide on short notice and immediately generating combat power., while the 307th, 333rd and 334th Fighter Squadrons are responsible for training all F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews for the U.S. Air Force.

I hope we get some cooler weather soon. This is not good for our area. Farmers and ranchers are selling their entire herds for lack of water and grass.

How about you? Surviving the dust?

Arrowhead mentioned the Texas weather forecast...here's what we hear every day now in Cochise County:

"Today's forecast calls for widely scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms, with precipitation mainly in the mountains. Daytime temps in the high nineties, falling to the mid-eighties overnight. Those of you living near where the fires burned be mindful of the possibility of flash flooding."

Widely scattered can easily mean the next block over gets an inch and a half in an hour, and my home stays dry. Or vice versa.

OTOH, on Sunday, we had solid thunderstorms from Naco, on the Mexican border, all the way to Tucson, over 100 miles away.

There are actually clouds in our area that may turn into showers later. I am praying we get some here and at home.

This new system at work is HORRID!!! "They" say it is so much easier and it doesn't make mistakes. Pardon me while I ROTFLMBO.....you put in the hours, IT decides what you meant. We have such a diverse payroll, that it is not working very well (for those that must make sure people get paid correctly). None of my units, security, work Monday thru Friday and have holidays off. This new system takes hours away from worked time and either says it was a holiday taken OR puts it in as OT. I am NOT having fun.

Already this morning one of my managers came to me and said, "It won't let me put OT and the rate I want, where I want it". Security guys could work at 4 different places at 4 different rates, or more, in a 2 week period. They want to input what they want, at the rate they want, and where they want it.

Widely scattered

That happens on the East coast as well. It can hit north of DC or south where I live. And depending on where in VA it comes out of the rain could still go south of me.

The bad thing is that all the farmers and ranchers have had to sell off their herds. This is worse than what I remember from the late 50s.
