WASHINGTON (AP) -- Time running short to raise the government's borrowing limit, President Barack Obama on Tuesday hailed a plan by a bipartisan senators' group on deficit reduction as the kind of "balanced approach" the nation is looking for. He said it's time for Congress as a whole to rally around such a proposal.
"We don't have any more time to engage in symbolic gestures, we don't have any more time to posture. It's time to get down to the business of actually solving this problem," the president said.
Obama spoke even as House Republicans pushed toward a vote on legislation that would require trillions in spending cuts and a balanced-budget constitutional amendment in exchange for an increase in the debt ceiling. That plan is unlikely to get through the Senate, and Obama has said he would veto it.
Facing an Aug. 2 deadline to raise the debt limit, Obama said he would call House Speaker John Boehner after the vote to invited him and other leaders back to the White House for meetings in coming days.

great, so if 0bama praises, I’m assuming the RINO’s caved. Please correct me if I’m wrong...
He likes this plan because it does not involve any real spending cuts, just tax hikes.
“...74 percent of the plans deficit-reduction goal would come from spending cuts and 26 percent from higher revenues.”
Absolutely no hope if they snatch victory from the closest thing to a win that they have had politically in years.
They WILL regret this BIG TIME come 2012 if they go through with it.
Of course he supports it. The thing is his plan, tax increases included, rebranded.
Yeah....higher taxes NOW, spending cuts LATER (if ever).
“Gang of Six” is an appropriate term.
Every one of them from the president on down is a gangsta.
Whatever they come up with, we will see taxes raised, unemployment increase, spending through the roof and the middle class ultimately wiped out.
Change we can all believe in.
It's the "kick the can" that he likes so HE doesn't have to cope with it before the elections.
What the he!! good is higher taxes going to do if nobody is working and the market is tanked?
Sens. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.)
Any, and I mean ANY, Republican that votes for this is an open enemy of the American people and should be removed from office.
If the party passes this, we need a new party.
If Obama likes it that is all I need to know. Run away from this fast!
Ann Barnhardt is right. There really is a Combine up there (just like here in the People’s Republic of Illinois).
If Obama praises it, it’s trash.
I don’t know whether to scream or cry. Barry is pimping out these useless Congressional Republicans. No fight in them at all. Readily agreeing to tax increases with 9% unemployment is their Waterloo. God help us.
That honestly is all that is needed to know!
Tax increases i can believe - spending reductions I cannot. Maybe the cuts are just cuts in presumed iincreases and not actual cuts to existing spending.
So Obama is going to get away with it - spend like a drunken you know what and then force us to pay for it under the “THIS IS A CRISIS” mode.
