U.S. Nearly Assassinated Top Al Qaeda Leader Awlaki, Sources Say
Fox News ^ | July 19, 2011 | Jennifer Griffin

The U.S. nearly took out Anwar Al-Awlaki, a top Al Qaeda target in Yemen, in an assassination attempt days after the killing of Usama bin Laden, senior U.S. defense and intelligence sources tell Fox News.

On May 5, Marine Harrier jets were sent on a mission to follow Awlaki using intelligence provided by Yemenis hoping to keep President Ali Abdullah Saleh in power.

The aircraft were able to locate Awlaki traveling in a truck. But fuel storage and technical problems with the jets’ Griffin missiles – a new and improved version of a Hellfire missile -- caused the operation to fail and allowed him to escape.

You just can't get a decent missile for a lousy million bucks these days.

And we need to know this why??

Because almost no one can keep their traps shut anymore, so our government has to release secrets before someone else does.

Somebody send Fleabaghead a case of DEPENDS because I’m sure he really shit his pants when the first missile hit.

Don’t worry, Ali asskisser, we’re gonna get you. As the newsman in the original movie of “The Thing”, said in his broadcast, “Look to the skies.”

Yep, ragpicker, it’s death from above coming at you at about 400-500 mph. Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.

It’s not a near-miss, it’s a hit.

It’s not an “almost assassinated”, it’s... didn’t.

Why not wait until he comes back to Fairfax, VA in August for summer vacation? Andrews AFB or Quantico would be a short sortie.

"Nearly" is in the ball park of all those 'woulda', 'coulda', 'might have', 'maybe', 'if', 'if only', etc. Don't count for squat and to even report a "nearly" is not only beyond ludicrous, it is asinine, idiotic, and most of all, irrelevant. =.=

I love all this nearly stuff. Another nearly ... The republicans nearly avoided folding in the debt crisis defending us from new taxes ... But alas they are republicans. Gutless republicans true to their colors... Yellow

I'm like you: in fact, a pet peeve of mine is when a football announcer says, "That pass was ALMOST INTERCEPTED!" I always say, "It's equally valid to say: 'The cornerback ALMOST MESSED UP THAT PLAY EVEN WORSE THAN HE DID!'"

As a matter of fact, that "almost intercepted", "almost assassinated" idea is both a real victory and a moral victory for the other side -- and thus it's a negative to even mention it as such.

Nah, the Griffin is a super new and tiny missile —maybe just 40 pounds. You can carry two or more for every hellfire.

DAMN..!! :(
