Negotiations on a debt ceiling increase broke down when President Obama made a late push for additional tax increases House Speaker John Boehner said late Friday, countering the president's account of the swiftly-deteriorating talks. Moments after Obama professed to be puzzled at Republicans' unwillingness to accept "an extraordinarily fair deal," Boehner said it was the president who scuttled the plan. "The White House moved the goal posts," he said, with Obama demanding $400 billion in revenues beyond what the two had already agreed to. "It's the president who walked away from his agreement and demanded more money at the last minute."

“Theyve got nothing to lose.”
We’ve got 2012 to lose.
Having said that, our side should still do what is right but they’ve just GOT to start an aggressive campaign to educate, educate, educate the people and counteract all the negative media ad propaganda on tv. They have to fight back with the truth - take it to the people!
“There are indeed ways to raise revenues without raising taxes.”
Yes, and I’m sure that’s what Boehner was talking about. He’s been adamant about refusing to raise taxes on us existing taxpayers.
Now, when BHO and the Dems talk about “revenues”, that’s an entirely different story. They ALWAYS mean raising taxes!
Boehner is not “whining!” As a former high school football player, coached by the future Notre Dame coach Gerry Faust, such characterization of Zer0 is with great contempt. If it were in the early days of our nation, it would be equivalent to the gesture called “throwing down the gauntlet” or a slap in the face. Such gestures were done in earlier times when a field of honor was selected and the pistols of equal quality were taken.
Peanut! Popcorn! Crackerjacks! Hot dogs! Game on!
“NO MORE CLOSED DOORS.”
0bama promised to have hearings on C-Span, another broken promise.
“The Left has won for 40 years because of incremental gains piling up.”
And why? Because they don’t eat their own.
All of us here say we love Reagan. His son Michael has said he would’ve loved the Tea Party and I’m sure that’s true. So, isn’t it sad that RR likely couldn’t get our nomination today with the rigidity, squabbling and in-fighting that we’ve fallen prey to.
Maybe it’s time to step back and listen to the tried and true wisdom of our Uncle Dutch. Pick our battles well, collaborate, be clever in fighting the enemy - not each other - and keep our eyes on the prize.
You’re wise - thanks for that.
Unless you are willing to default on your massive debt and possibly send the country, and possibly the entire world, into a massive depression, it may be necessary to accept an increase of the debt ceiling just to get a deal.
We can always fight for a lowering of the debt ceiling after this deal.
In politics, relationships are everything.
Boehner would be saying the same thing, even if he despised Obama to the very dark core of his soul.
“I guess President Ronald Reagan wasn’t a winner... Perhaps we should heed his words of wisdom a bit”
You should post that as a thread! It’d do us all a lot of good and would make for a great exchange.
“When actually they are a bunch of drifters/minor league showboats who couldnt cut it for a year in the private sector.”
Boehner got his private sector start sweeping floors as a kid in his parent’s bar and grill and worked his way up from there. He’s been a successful business owner. His background is in the real world, unlike a lot of the silver-spoon career politicians who’ve never held a true job.
You are very wise (as I also told FromTheSidelines) :-))))))
"There is no limit to what you can accomplish if you don't care who gets the credit." - Ronald Reagan
We could learn a lot by revisiting the wisdom of the Gipper...
As long as you come to buffer the inevitable attacks I’ll get for being a “RINO” by suggesting that strategy...;)
“As long as you come to buffer the inevitable attacks Ill get for being a RINO by suggesting that strategy...;)”
LOL - I’ll be right there with ya (see my post #65).
Maybe we can get !1776 to join us :-))))))))))
Ahh... greed. So, basically he already got most he wanted, then he demanded more. It was then that the Boehner and Co. balked at him.
President 0bama, is that you? You said that in early 2009, didn't you?
I'm convinced Obama wants to keep this charade going to keep the focus off the Gunwalker scandal that's brewing in the House. If he can keep the news media focused on this circus, they won't pay any attention to Daryl Issa's investigation. "Never let a crisis go to waste." - Rahm Emmanuel
Thank you!
Sanity is alive and well on Free Republic!
Obama is sweating it now. Boehner holds all of the cards, and the polls are with him.
I never thought I would say this but, Boehner isn’t a squish.
Finally...there is someone who is willing to tell Obama “NO”.
Your posts are invaluable.
Thank you!
