A south Bossier City homeowners association has sued to force a family to remove a front yard sign supporting their son's military service because it violated subdivision covenants.

The Burrs placed a large multicolored banner with a picture of their 20-year-old son, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Corey Burr, and the phrase "Our son defends our freedom" in January after Corey Burr was deployed to Afghanistan.

Interesting reply! And what happens when their electricity goes out, the basement floods, the toilet breaks, an electric wire falls across their house/condo during a winter storm? Do they call the lawyer or middle manager of an insurance company? Nope! They call that working-class stiff in the pickup who knows how to fix things with his hands and mind.

This is not my idea of conservatism at all.

“...prevent our complex from turning into a white trash trailer park.”

A legitimate concern for an HOA seeing how the lots are about the same size.

“The making and enforcing of such restrictions is commonly known as “self-government”.

Right, however most towns and counties already have ‘quality of life’ by-laws which make extra-judicial HOA rules suspect. Also, the HOA is an opened ended financial liability to “the community” which may not benefit an individual owner. When people stop paying dues or maintenance costs skyrocket the homeowners get fleeced. In FL racketeering via the maintenance contracts is common.

But the owners sign the agreement so caveat emptor.

The arguments on this thread are stupid. Like Mac-vs-Windows or blue or red auto.

HOAs are a bad idea but a good practice imo. In small communities they help. But they have a larger liability than benefit imo. They’re very circumstantial.

HOA’s are like every other group of organized people, such as unions, government agencies, and corporations. The pack instinct comes out, teeth are bared, loners are chased away.

“So get me a copy of the documents and photos of the other signs, and I’ll be happy to let you know what I think.”

What you junior Internet lawyers fail to understand is that once those other signs are accepted ALL signs must be accepted no matter what those documents say. Equal protection under the terms of the contract and management of the HOA are require or else the ones not getting equal protection may get that contract canceled.

I tell you what - you freepmail me your Louisiana bar number, and I’ll freepmail you mine back, and we’ll see who has drafted the most Louisiana real estate documents.

I did the exact same thing here.. told the Realtor.. if it has an HOA I am not buying it.

Funny how my street looks like there is an HOA.. everything is neat and clean.. yet no Neighborhood Nazis to measure my grass or fine me.

I laugh at all the people who live in HOA communities.. If someone can tell you what to do with your property, you dont own it.

Well, we do have an aggressive city code enforcement department, so there is that to deal with.

HOA sites are ghettos for the pussy-whipped.

I can scarcely conceive of living under the rule of neurotic cat-ladies and retired bureaucrats.

I’ll take my chances of being et by bears in the bush!

“and we’ll see who has drafted the most Louisiana real estate documents.”

So, you logic is that having done more means being right? With that illogical conclusion you passed the bar? Must not have been a very tough test at all.

I’ve gone against HOAs more than once and won. Their contracts are usually written by pinhead lawyers that think they know it all but haven’t a clue.

I’m sure that your knowledge of the Code Napoleon is adequate in your own mind.

This whole thread is just filled with love, just like an HOA meeting. I’m sure glad I don’t live in one.

You’re the one that brought up that since you are a lawyer you must be right. Seems if anyone has a compex it is you.
