With mountains of rubbish towering over children and endless bin bags bulging from high-rise flats, these are the shocking images that show Cairo's 'Garbage City' - where thousands of Egyptians live amongst piles of stinking rubbish.

Manshiyat naser, or Garbage city, as it is known by locals, is a slum on the outskirts of Cairo, just a short drive away from luxury five star resorts.

But these shocking photos show a whole community which has been living in the slums for hundreds of years surrounded by rats and rotting rubbish.

It’s a slum. Anywhere in the world slums are called slums for a reason.

We visited Cairo a couple years ago. The “garbage city” is just their housing integrated with a recycling area in which the Coptic Christians sort trash they collect. Their pigs ate the garbage. This has been “forever”. The Copts are denied many other opportunities in that moozlum culture so they do this for economic survival. It wasn’t especially smelly, the people were clean, they adapted top living with in this chaos and the people with whom we talked with were happy. Unfortunately for them, when the “swine flu” scare occurred the moozlums confiscated all their pigs and killed them without compensation. It is worth a visit. There is an interesting large Coptic Christian church carved out of rock in the neighborhood.

Also, there are several tens of thousands of moozlum families living in the main cemetery in Cairo. They live in the graves, keep them clean and (with advance notice from the grieving families) vacate the premises when a burial needs to occur.

Cairo isn’t the suburbs of America, folks.
