House doesn’t vote on GOP debt bill
The Washington Times ^ | 7-9-11 | Stephen Dinan and Sean Lengell

Lacking enough support to pass their debt-limit bill, House Republican leaders postponed a scheduled vote Thursday and were working feverishly behind closed doors to try to round up votes, though the delay further complicates matters as all sides struggle to beat an Aug. 2 deadline. The leaders had brought the bill to the floor and the debate had been raging for more than two hours Thursday afternoon when Republicans abruptly halted the proceedings midstream and pivoted to other, non-controversial business.

I think the fundamental disadvantage for the GOP is a government shutdown benefits the Dems more than the republicans.

This hurts and means time is not on our side.

Spending bills must originate in House. The nation is bankrupt. The House has passed three (?) budgets, all tabled in the Senate. Spinning this against us is a full time job. Fighting such smears is a part time job, and the Tea Party crowd is happy to volunteer effort in the task. The worst thing that could happen is for Boehner and Cantor to succeed in providing the Senate with a weak vessel of a bill they can butcher to their own purposes and hand back to the House for re-passing ... still bound in a Republican book cover. I'm still crossing my fingers that doesn't happen. Talk about a lose-lose scenario. At that point the Republicans have the choice of either stabbing We the People in the back by passing the abomination, or giving the Democrat party election campaign fodder by not signing was will be spun as their own bill and appearing as obstructionists.

This would result in a government slowdown, not shutdown. It favors whichever side has the balls to see it through to the end.

I will state an unpopular position on this board.
I care less about the total cuts in any bill than that they remove automatic spending increases from baseline budgeting and include a list of priorities for payments in case of a lack of either budget authority (current CR ends Oct 1), or they hit the borrowing limit again.

Why oh why did the GOP keep trying to pass bills? Why not stop at CC&B and wait for the Senate to act or not? This death of a thousand cuts approach always cedes the PR battle to the Democrats. It will always be the Republicans fault. Why does Boehner persist?

“Why oh why did the GOP keep trying to pass bills? Why not stop at CC&B and wait for the Senate to act or not? “

Because Boehner is part of big government and does not believe in stopping its growth.

D-fendr:

What is the point of fighting in an election if we fold every time we might actually be (horrors!!!) CRITICIZED by the Lame Stream Media or even by Comrade O and the Demonrats. It just hurts sooooo much to be criticized. No one can actually expect lamebrain RINOs like Boehner and McConnell to have a backbone in the face of, well, actual criticism.

When the leftists attacked Mayor Daley the Elder for sending his cops to apply billy clubs to their pinheads and shove them through plate glass windows of department stores at the 1968 Chicago Demonrat convention, Daley did not curl up in a fetal position and whine or blubber. First, he led the Chicago/Illinois delegation in a vibrant chant telling Senator Abraham Ribicoff to perform an unnatural act with himself along with some other colorful epithets (reduced by lame stream liars to "get down Ribicoff" but see the tape and read Daley's lips. Next, in response to some sorry leftist alderthing (Bill Singer) complaining about nepotism and patronage, the still enraged Daley made fun of his critics by saying in a self-parody: "I have been vilified. I have been crucified. I have EVEN been CRITICIZED." During the MLK, Jr., memorial riots in April, 1968, Daley the Elder did NOT respond by saying: "Let's make a deal!" Instead he went on live television to order his police to shoot to kill arsonists and to shoot to maim looters. Just think! Daley was, in fact, a liberal public figure.

Of course, Daley the Elder was a man's man and not a spineless accommodationist wimp like Boehner or McConnell. Daley did not worry about whether brainless Muffy and her Junior League friends or brainless Skipper and his polo pals or the equally despicable folks down at the yacht club and other trust fund babies would approve. He just got the job done. If they did not like it, toooooo baaaaaaaddd! I don't remember Daley the Elder losing any elections once he become mayor either.

The very notion of a GOP Speaker wallowing in the muck pleading with conservative Congressmen to violate their campaign promises to keep weepy Boehner from being, well, actually criticized, is beneath contempt.

Boehner is actually trying to increase Obama Claus's election year allowance by $2.5 trillion in exchange for an illusory and quite fictional $100 billion or less per year in backloaded "cuts" that can and will be done away with as soon as the Demonrats have the House again. Boehner should resign as Speaker in favor of someone with a backbone, with guts, with a determination to engage the Demonrats in Armageddon over their spending practices. If Boehner will not resign in favor of a real Republican, depose the cowardly SOB and publicly invite him to resign his seat in Congress. If he won't do that primary him out next year. Target 25 of his ruling class brainless buddies to be defeated with him in primaries.

If time is not on our side, then it is not on our side because our Demonrat in "Republican" drag cowards/"leaders" absolutely refuse to FIGHT and refuse to WIN.

Here's a strategy:

Pass on day one a budget with $100 billion in IMMEDIATE cuts to liberals' favorite squander schemes like EPA, Justice Department leftist projects, Energy Department, "Education" Department, Commerce Department, Labor Department, State Department sovereignty sapping diployak schemes, housing schemes, no polo club subsidies, etc. No fun or subsidies at all for the ruling class layered in fedlard or their welfare cousins of the ACORN type. Take the money ONLY from leftwing lard. No compromises. No quarter. No tax increases. No schemes to shift the tax burden in any direction. No Social Security or Medicare cuts. No defense cuts (we can review defense spending later to scrap the loads of liberal lard such as "impacted areas" gummint skewel aid and such and consider closing a lot of obsolete foreign bases). Scrap the Peace Corps and VISTA and other expensive expressions of left wing idealism/lunacy. No subsidies for leftist college professors to get rich doing "studies" of the sex habits of Tasmanian billy goats. You get the picture?

If the Senate does not approve of that bill with a mere $100 billion in IMMEDIATE cuts, then on day 2, pass another bill with $200 billion in IMMEDIATE cuts in such leftist squander projects. Include the food budget and travel budget at the White House. If Obama Claus has to have Moochelle under foot all day every day and cooking the family meals paid out of his salary (which is plenty sufficient) instead of galavanting around the world on $600 million dollar escapades in Spain on the Spanish Riviera on our nickel, and, if we cut out his golfing budget, he can get down to the business of surrendering to the taxpayers for a change. Repeat with an additional $100 billion in IMMEDIATE cuts of that sort each and every day until the Demonrats run up the white flag once and for all. If we are going to be called "terrorists" by the likes of Nancy Facelift, then by all means let us get the benefit of BEING fiscal "terrorists!"

A permanent end to baseline budgeting.

This is not possible under wimps like McConnell and Boehner. Dump both of them now to tell their Demon pals: "AND WE MEAN IT!!!"

"Because Boehner is part of big government and does not believe in stopping its growth."

So the GOP leadership is apparently uneducable and we are left with a set of horrible choices: Support Boehner, further mortgage the future and fight in 2012; vote down the Boehner bill and try and drive Boehner from the Speakership; start forming the foundation for a third party. All choices significantly enhance Obama's chances at reelection.

Thanks for the ping BE.

You are so right with what you say that there is hardly anything that can be added.

Boehner has made a complete fool and ass out of himself and watching this spectacle has been vomit inducing.

Before turning in last nite (this morning actually) I was thinking about the idiocy of even trying to compromise with the marxists left. CC&B should have been resubmitted over and over...period.

You watch, this will be used for another step toward complete totalitarianism rule. The leftists are already screeching about using the 14th amendment to go around congress & raise the ceiling. This could be used to further us along to the complete overthrow of our country.

I agree with you as to the three choices and none are good. Boehner apparently does not have the guts to go to Obama and Reid publicly or privately to say, “If Cut, Cap, Balance is unacceptable then put your own plan on the table for the public to see.” I can’t for the life of me understand why the man can’t do it unless he doesn’t want to begin fixing our fiscal issues.

I know many conservatives are saying wait and fight in 2012. If the Republican nominee is Romney, and he is elected, I’m not sure things will be much different than they are now. I see no evidence Romney is prepared or willing to fight the Democrats.

To save America, it is going to be necessary to fight the liberal tyranny. Every day that goes by our country gets weaker and there is more to undo. Now is the time to fight. If we can articulate the message the people will understand and get behind us. What Mr. Boehner doesn’t understand is leaders sometime have to do the unpopular thing and there are times when one does not compromise. He is so accustomed to compromising it seems he can’t recognize the moment is here to plot a new course.
