All Eyes on the Senate: Can Two Veterans Deliver a Debt Deal?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell are not chatty men by nature. Notoriously monosyllabic, either man could probably compete for a world record in shortest average phone conversation. But that doesn’t mean they’re not talking now. Although not fast friends, Reid and McConnell have one of the most functional professional relationships in a Congress that’s currently in the news for remarkable dysfunction.

If only listening to their public speeches, one might think the two were mortal enemies.

“Rather than working the last few days toward a solution to this crisis the way the Republican majority in the House has, the Democratic majority here in the Senate has been wasting precious time rounding up no votes to keep this crisis alive,” McConnell said on the Senate floor Friday morning.

“We’re willing to work with him and his staff as we have to try to come up with a solution,” Reid shot back. “I’m here indicating to the world that I spent my whole adult life trying to compromise and build a consensus.”

But behind the scenes, they get along well and, in fact, share quite a lot in common. Both men came to the Senate as young men in humble circumstances. McConnell served as an intern for Kentucky Republican John Sherman Cooper, a favorite across-the-aisle partner of then President John F. Kennedy. Reid worked part-time as a Capitol Hill police officer while earning his law degree at George Washington University. They both became lawyers and went on to spend most of their adult lives in politics.

These two long term spoiled slugs should be off fishing somewhere and allow someone with vision to make decisions.
McConnell never had a real job and Reid sounds as if demetia is one step behind him. God help America.

They remind me of a couple of Star Wars characters. Reid and McConnell as apprentices for the Sith Lord Darth Sidious (Obama).

“either man could probably compete for a world record in shortest average phone conversation”

The above quote is BS, because “motormouth” REID is so quick to criticize anything by GOP on camera, and talks about phone calls with Pelosi, who we know is the black hole of bull....no way is the above statement of Reid correct...lol

Well, they are certainly what’s wrong with the Senate, but I’d say there is a nce division in the House now.

We’re playing hot potato now.

A downgrade is coming no matter what and its all a matter of who is holding the bag when it happens.

Yes the main thing wrong with Reid and McConnell is that they have been in the Senate since they were young men. They are professional politicians. Totally out of touch with the general public.

Our local mullet wrapper has a front page article(editorial) today blaming the 'TEA Party' for the 'tragedy facing Congress'. The article made it clear that the 'TEA Party' insisting on a balanced budget amendment was the cause of the problem.

The fools. They gave the TEA Party credit for being the only honest mature adults in the room. Thank you liberals. You spelled our name correctly!!

I sent McConnell this email this morning.
There has been much rhetoric in the past few days about the current situation in which the United States of American has found itself. One fact that can not be argued is that the United States of America is in trouble. Decades of foolish and irresponsible behavior has resulted in the destruction of the most wonderful form of government that has ever been conceived on this planet. There have been many heroes in the history of this once great nation. Men and women who stopped doing what was in their interest and , in spite of the consequences , put this great country above their own personal aspirations and fortune. You are in the position to become one of those heroes,Mr. McConnell. It is time for Washington to stop the business as usual. We are broke. We do not have the money to continue business as usual. We are broke. The House of Representatives and Senate made us broke. You can no longer kick the can down the street. We are at a turning point and, I suspect, probably at the end of life as we know it. It is time for some hard realities but, Americans in the past have been known to look hard realities in the face and then do the right thing in spite of the pain and personal sacrifice that this entails. Gather your troops and stop this madness. Stop Spending Money We Do Not Have. Stop Lying to the American People. Stop killing this country.Stop listening to the lies of your party and the lies of the Democrats. Will you rise to the challenge Mr. McConnell ? Or, will you continue the con games that the legislative bodies of this country have foisted upon those of us who only want to work, raise our families, and live in the greatest country in the world ?. I am a realist. I know that the group of people who are supposed to run the government of this country are self centered, greedy and hateful men and women. I weep for my country. We are watching you Mr. McConnell

"But behind the scenes, they get along well and, in fact, share quite a lot in common."

And there in lies our problem with the Senate and Congress in general.

Few Congressional leaders get along well with us nor share a lot in common with those who elected them.

“We’re willing to work with him and his staff as we have to try to come up with a solution,” Reid shot back. “I’m here indicating to the world that I spent my whole adult life trying to compromise and build a consensus.”

And when I play poker, I indicate things that aren't true about my actual hand - "indicating" and telling the truth are very different thing...
