DeMint won't target GOP yes votes (DeMint surrenders to Obama, McConnell and Reid)

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) says he's not going to target incumbent Republican senators who back the debt deal.

"I respect how any of those folks vote, I obviously disagree. This is not a good deal for America," DeMint told POLITICO Monday evening. "I respect how any of my colleagues vote on this."

Flashback: DeMint Warns New GOP Tea-Party Backed Senators: Don’t Sell Out

Many of the people who will be welcoming the new class of Senate conservatives to Washington never wanted you here in the first place. The establishment is much more likely to try to buy off your votes than to buy into your limited-government philosophy. Consider what former GOP senator-turned-lobbyist Trent Lott told the Washington Post earlier this year: “As soon as they get here, we need to co-opt them...”

... Don’t let them. Co-option is coercion. Washington operates on a favor-based economy and for every earmark, committee assignment or fancy title that’s given, payback is expected in return. The chits come due when the roll call votes begin. This is how big-spending bills that everyone always decries in public always manage to pass with just enough votes.

But someone can’t be bribed if they aren’t for sale...

... Tea party Republicans were elected to go to Washington and save the country—not be co-opted by the club. So put on your boxing gloves. The fight begins today.

Here’s his newest statement. Not that old one.

DeMint had promised after last year’s election that he would not endorse any opponents to his fellow GOP lawmakers in the 2012 cycle. But now he is angry enough with the debt-ceiling compromise that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) struck with President Obama that he might back serious challengers to Republican senators who support the plan, according to a source close to the senator.

“He’s already opened the door to changing that policy in terms of supporting people in primaries — this deal could bring him to the point where he says he’s not going to make any guarantees,” said the source, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitive nature of intraparty relations. “It’s not a threat that he’s going to oppose anybody, but … if he does, nobody should be surprised.”

I truly believe that Jim DeMint has been quietly working behind the scenes for more years than most Americans know to get us closer to a conservative American government. He has power that not many people understand.

Given that DeMint has been one of the leaders in pushing for principled ideas that reduce that debt and lead to a balanced budget, it would be foolish to turn on him for not wanting to start a civil war among his colleagues.

Thanks for the ping, upchuck.

jimbo123, DeMint did not capitulate.

DeMint’s speech on the Senate floor this evening is a worthwhile listen. Unlike his fellow Republicans, DeMint knows what TEA membership is about.

DeMint surrenders. Pathetic coward.

Just chill. Sen. DeMint is NO coward. Sometimes, when a battle is lost (and this one IS, effectively) it’s better to save your ammunition, keep your powder dry, and reposition your troops so that no more harm is done to them at this point.

Sure, stand against the enemy, expose and cry out against his obvious plans, but wait for a more opportune time to launch a full scale counter-assault. DeMinst knows this. He’ll bid his time. Boehner, McConnell and the Inside-the-Beltway RINO’s have made that certain — for now. That won’t last forever.

“I trust Sarah Palin, Rand Paul, Tim Scott and not many other Republicans. “

Better start digging if you’re going to move that mountain with a TEA spoon.

Oh yes, now DeMint is a RINO. C’mon, folks.

I believe the real problem is that conservatives don't really have a party in this coutry. Both republicans and democrats are the parties of the status quo. The only reason a lot of folks here are 'republican' is because they don't know what else to be. What "RINO" has essentially come to mean, is that the politician has no principles for which he will stand. At least no conservative principles worth mentioning. That means that the congresscritter is definitely a 'republican' because he fits right in with the rest of the slimy bastards, but he's not one of us..

I'd say he's down for the 10-count in the 2nd round. Didn't last long did he?

I don't see it as a sellout. We got what we could for now. It's time to take the next step. We didn't defeat Japan or Hitler in a day. Serious addictions require a 12-step program. We have to roll up our sleeves and one-by-one push this all the way through, building strength and momentum as we go.

Step Two: Fiscal Year 2012 begins October first, only one appropriations bill has been passed. Cut til it hurts, then cut some more.

Step Three: Get that 28th Constitutional Amendment written with teeth in it. Shame the Spendoholic members of Congress into voting for it. Call it the "Responsibility Amendment." Get it passed,

Step Four: Put the Screws to the Screwy Committee of 12 to be serious. Hardball. Take it to the people via TV.

Step Five: Nominate a proven brawler for President. Ryan or Rubio for VP for communication enhancement.

Step Six: Work our tails off to get the 28th Amendment through 38 state legislatures.

Step Seven: Take over the US Senate. 60 votes is not impossible.

Step Eight: Elect 30 more Tea Party seats to the House. It can be done, build more momentum.

Step Nine: Elect A Bengal Tiger to the Presidency (or Grizzly Bear, if it turns out that way).

Step Ten: Reduce borrowing to zero over 2 years. reach zero borrowing.

Step Eleven: Turn the Behemoth Around. Pay off $500 billion of debt first year, $1 Trillion year two, etc.

Step Twelve: Throw a really big coast-to-coast party.

It would be nice to do it all in a day, but it needs to be done step by relentless step.

Exactly. It's not a surrender, it's a tactical retreat.

The problem, though, is that DeMint is even in this position. The fact that Boehner and, apparently, enough other Republicans supported this bill to get it through is what really pisses me off. This battle shouldn't have been lost. But it was, and not because of DeMint.

Like I said, I respect your opinion. I realize, for whatever reason(s), you don’t like Sen. DeMint. That’s okay by me. I have no problem with that. Now, please repay the favor. I do like Sen DeMint. A lot. If you can’t deal with that, I feel sorry for you. Please run along and post as much as you want. I’m done having conversations with you.
