~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D. C.

The United States Naval Research Laboratory is the corporate research laboratory for the Navy and Marine Corps, and conducts a broad program of scientific research, technology and advanced development. NRL has served the Navy and the nation for over 85 years and continues to meet the complex technological challenges of today's world.

NRL was the first modern research institution created within the U.S. Navy. It began operations at 11:00 a.m. on July 2, 1923. The first step came in May 1915, a time when Americans were deeply worried about the great European war. Thomas Edison, when asked by a New York Times correspondent to comment on the conflict, argued that the Nation should look to science.

"The Government" he proposed in a published interview, "should maintain a great research laboratory... In this could be developed... all the technique of military and naval progression without any vast expense." Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels seized the opportunity created by Edison's public comments to enlist Edison's support. He agreed to serve as the head of a new body of civilian experts - the Naval Consulting Board - to advise the Navy on science and technology.

NRL operates as the Navy's full-spectrum corporate laboratory, conducting a broadly based multidisciplinary program of scientific research and advanced technological development directed toward maritime applications of new and improved materials, techniques, equipment, systems and ocean, atmospheric, and space sciences and related technologies.

In 1992, the Secretary of the Navy consolidated existing Navy Research, Development, Test and Evaluation Engineering facilities and Fleet Support facilities to form a corporate community. This community consists of a single corporate research laboratory (NRL) aligned with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and four warfare-oriented centers aligned by mission with the Systems Commands. The four centers are the Naval Air Warfare Center, the Naval Command Control and Ocean Surveillance Center, the Naval Surface Warfare Center, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center.

As part of the consolidation, the Naval Oceanographic and Atmospheric Research Laboratory, with locations in Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, and Monterey, California, merged with NRL to become what is today, the Navy's corporate laboratory. NRL, the Navy's single, integrated Corporate Laboratory, provides the Navy with a broad foundation of in-house expertise from scientific through advanced development activity.

The main part of the memorial, which was completed in 1982, is in Constitution Gardens adjacent to the National Mall, just northeast of the Lincoln Memorial. The memorial is maintained by the U.S. National Park Service, and receives around 3 million visitors each year. The Memorial Wall was designed by U.S. landscape architect Maya Lin. The typesetting was performed by Datalantic in Atlanta, Georgia.

I'll get to be more regular again in the Canteen once I get settled in my new place!

Still sunny and 85ish here; how's your weather been?

Sorry...I was called away.

Humidity is a real killer! I absolutely loathe summer rain showers. However, they are good for the dry lands up here! :)

Good evening, Pro...((HUGS))

Glad you are getting settled in your new place. Always interesting finding new “places” for ones things.

It has been raining off and on for a couple days and is supposed to continue all week. Very little at my house, tho.
