The death of a homeless man fatally injured during a fight with Fullerton police has captured the attention of the community and affected morale in the department.
Kelly Thomas, 37, who was schizophrenic, died July 10, five days after the confrontation with six police officers at the Fullerton Transportation Center.
Fullerton police Sgt. Andrew Goodrich said the department has received hundreds of phone calls and e-mails from across California and hundreds turned out to protest Saturday morning at the Fullerton police station.
"It's not pleasant to see people in front of the police station calling the officers 'murderers,'" Goodrich said.
"We understand the community is outraged and concerned and what we've said all along is the incident happened, but the chief called for an outside agency to do a transparent investigation of what happened that night," Goodrich said.

Judging from the photos I’ve seen, he wasn’t “injured during a fight”, he was savagely beaten and electrocuted to death.
Then maybe they shouldn't have murdered the guy.
Or just go out and kill the demonstrators, too.
The murdered guy is pretty bummed, too.
Easy prediction: complete clearance for all involved officers, paid leaves and promotions.
They should quit then.
If an ordinary citizen killed a homeless man he would be charged with manslaughter or negligent homicide and thrown in jail where he would sit unless he could make bail.
Policemen who kill get desk duty and feel bad because they are called names. Maybe it was an accident but why wasn’t the prime suspect charged until things are sorted out? It is not like there were zero witnesses.
The problem is that the 6 involved are still on the streets.
No one is safe until they get pulled while the investigation is conducted.
That's their current training.
We shouldn't rush to judgement without all the facts however the city of Fullerton has offerred the father $900,000 for his silence. Why don't they wait until we have all the facts. Maybe it will be $9,000,000 and 6 murder charges.
Murders, call them what they are. The other police should demand these 6 be removed from the force tonight.

I live in Fullerton and I’m only a couple of miles away from the transportation center. Saw the video with all the witnesses watching and have a question.
If another civilian attacks me I have the right to defend myself. But if I am attacked by a police officer that same defense is called resisting arrest. Another person, coming to my defense would be charged with interfering with a police officer.
So what are my rights if I’m unjustly attacked by a cop? Must I wait for the courts to give me justice and hope that I won’t get killed or maimed? Am I legally required to endure the beating just because my assailant has a badge?

What about the variable of schizophrenia? Are these folks always mellow? Even-keeled? If they are off their meds, are they still? I just like to examine all the variables.

According to the most recent article from the OC Register, the City of Fullerton has reportedly offered the dean man’s father $900,000. $900,000. for a man’s life? Is human life that cheap today? There needs to be a $90 million dollar lawsuit brought against Fullerton if police brutality can be proven, and there needs to be some accountability up the chain of command. You don’t do stuff like this unless the higher up’s condone it. Nothing this guy could have been doing should have resulted in his death! If a group of citizens had done this, they would all be in jail w/o bail awaiting a trial. Every day, as I peruse FR, I find police misconduct multiple times. And always, the PD “mouthpiece” is calling for calm while “ a transparent investigation” is conducted. That’s police speak for give us a few weeks to concoct a semi-plausable story so we can sweep this ugly mess under the rug. But not here it seems. You can’t get away with a wanton killing, even if you wear a blue suit.
And they can’t bully, beat or kill those uppity protestors who are “disrespecting the police” either. It must be stressful.
Yes he was mentally ill. So that gives these policement the right to execute him.. Sounds like Nazi Germany, kill everyone who was old, sick or Jewish.
The cartel gun running organization has been called in to conduct the investigation. I’m sure we can trust them! /s/
