Mountain meadow restored for elk lacks . . . elk

SEQUIM — Prime forage land for the Sequim elk herd has been created, compliments of the National Forest Service and other wildlife preservation groups that have worked hard to create a plush green mountain meadow on historic elk habitat near Caraco and Canyon creeks in the Upper Dungeness River watershed.

Since 2005, about $88,000 has gone into the project to improve habitat in the large land mammal’s historic calving grounds in Olympic National Forest.

There’s only one drawback.

No elk can be found there now that the restoration project has matured.

"

In the late 1990s, some members of the Sequim elk herd were tranquilized and airlifted to Brinnon.

Talk about building an elk fence from the Dungeness River to Blyn began after the five-mile U.S. Highway 101 bypass was built in south Sequim from 1997-1999.

The debate over elk fences returned in 2007 with a committee envisioning an 8-foot-high, 9-mile-long barrier, paid for by state, local and tribal governments, but nothing materialized. "

Time after time we see the meddling of people who think they can redirect nature prove fruitless. -- and costly

The success or failure of these reintroduction programs is irrelevant. For instance, they are "reintroducing" elk into southern Missouri right now... to a place where elk never existed in the first place.

The restrictions these "reintroduction" programs enable the government to impose on landowners is the point.

All part of United Nations Agenda 21, to reduce the population to a small fraction of its current level, and return most of the land to "the wild."

Many people don’t know that Sequim gets less than
9” of rain per year.

And its pronounced “Sequim”.

Make that “Squim”.

Auto-correct is not always a good thing.

Actually, it is spelled Sequim, but it’s pronounced Squim.

Maybe they moved to North Bend. They hang out along I90
just east of town along the Snoqualmie R.

Saw a car that hit one - big mess...

So, there’s no Elks. What about Moose? Or the Knights of Columbus?

In 2010, the median household income in the US was $52,026.

To put this in a different light, for every $52,026 that government consumes to fund projects like this, it must destroy the annual income of one entire household. For every $1 million project it destroys the income of 5 households.

How many of these projects are essential to the safety and well being of our households and how many are just luxuries we can no longer afford? Far too many!

My wife and I were traveling by train through rural Romania about ten years ago and we met an elderly Asian lady with a heavy accent on the train. She asked: “Jeff and Su, you tell me, where I from?”

Me: “Vietnam?”
Her: “No. I from Sequim!”
Me: “Really? That’s a coincidence. I’m from Port Townsend (about 30 miles away).”
Her: “That’s right!”

Weird conversation followed. She ran a cafe in Sequim called Sunny’s (her name was Sunny) and I stopped in on a visit back to the NW several years later but didn’t see her.

This only means that they haven’t spent enough money, which is the liberals solution to every failed government program.

“The debate over elk fences returned in 2007 with a committee envisioning an 8-foot-high, 9-mile-long barrier, paid for by state, local and tribal governments, but nothing materialized. “

Must be the same committee working on the Border fence with Mexico.

I know the Sequim area well. Just leave the elk alone for crying out loud. Let elk do what elk do, and if a truck thins out the herd by one from time to time - so be it.

I owned a business from 1995-1999 right across the street from Sunny’s. ( My mom still owns the building).

Great breakfast place.

I thought I spotted a few members of the Sons Of Italy grazing nearby. I even heard one exclaim, “Take the gun, leave the cannoli.”

Now, just a darn minute. FINALLY, a sensible federal expenditure and you attack it. Here’s the inside scoop: The elk will return if the federales spend five times as much in each of the next 20 years. We want fancy housing, hot and cold running water and food, college scholarships and safe transport to and from annual winter vacation luxury digs. Otherwise, we play the speciesist card and get fabulous Hollywood starlets to take it all off to protest the cruel traditional treatment of my folks. That’ll teach you guys.

I think you mean almost 20 household incomes.
