STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Spurred in part by an Advance editorial that criticized her, state Sen. Diane Savino (D-North Shore/Brooklyn) today apologized for referring to Tea Party members as "the new mafia" on her personal Facebook page.
In a posting on her Facebook page, Ms. Savino said, “when you use language that upsets people it muddies your message. So, if the term mafia is offensive to anyone, I offer my apology.”
Ms. Savino said “leaders should be able to admit when they are wrong.”
As part of her mea culpa, Ms. Savino also posted a link to the critical Advance editorial, titled, “No way for a leader to talk.”
Ms. Savino used the word mafia Monday in linking to New York Times editorial critical of how Tea Party lawmakers in Congress acted during the debt-ceiling debate.

The mafia relies on amoral thuggery and intimidation, and the buying off of crooked (mostly Democrats) politicians and cops.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Tired of receiving what she said were “incredibly offensive” pamphlets from opponents of same-sex marriage, state Sen. Diane Savino this week posted a sign outside the door to her Albany office in hopes of keeping the “ugly, hateful rhetoric” at bay.
“Bigots & homophobes, please put your literature here” the sign read above her office mailbox.
Staffers said the literature the senator and her aides had been receiving from foes of marriage equality featured images that were pornographic.
Ms. Savino (D-North Shore/Brooklyn) is a long-time supporter of same-sex marriage.
“I don’t know why they kept giving it to her because it’s not like she is going to change her mind,” said one Savino staffer who asked not to be identified.
In an e-mail to the Advance, Ms. Savino said the sign was removed today because “the visitors have stopped.”
“Some of the people who were from the Albany area — no NYC or constituents — were incredibly offensive,” said Ms. Savino. “I am not going to tolerate people coming into my office, threatening my staff or me. Ugly, hateful rhetoric is not allowed.”
Gene Cosgriff, of the Staten Island Right to Life Committee, e-mailed a photo of the sign to the Advance with the comment: “Ms. Savino seems to have forgotten that as a representative of all of her constituents, she is supposed to respect diverse opinions, even those with which she doesn’t agree. Besmirching the names of those who support the time immemorial belief that marriage is the union of a man with a woman is not only poor judgment and tasteless, it is an outrageous insult.”

Both of my grand parents on my mother's side came from Sicily and my uncle claimed to his dying day that he was innocent when he was sentenced to 8 - 12 years for racketeering back in the 70s, so my family takes umbrage when people throw the "mafia" label around.
As a TEA party member and an American with roots that meander through olive oil and garlic, I'm offended and don't accept her apology.
If diane savino were to commit public suicide, as a show of good faith, I'd be more inclined to accept her apology.

The correct phrase is “La Cosa Nostra” [”Our Thing”]. In Sicily it used to be referred to as “The Honored Society”. In Chicago, it’s “The Outfit” or “The Democrats”. I forget which

I did a google search on Vanafanculo and he helpfully asked, “Did you mean ‘Vaffanculo’?”
That’s no apology. Since it was a smear against a broad, diverse coalition of American patriots, she’s opened herself up to a class-action lawsuit for libel and defamation.
