This fall when you stop by your local Walgreens store to fill a prescription, get a flu shot, or pick up a candy bar or some smokes, you may also be able to buy a health insurance policy.
While the company has neither confirmed nor denied it, the nation’s largest drugstore chain is said to be gearing up to launch a private health insurance exchange in the fall, reports CNNMoney (read here). CNN says that Walgreen Co. will sell a variety of plans with different price ranges and levels of coverage through a private health insurance exchange.

But how is it? Walgreens has apparently been expanding its base for years. When SCOTUS hopefully repeals that giant turd of a law, Walgreens could still offer coverage--with less rules than before.
I wonder if EVERY health story that comes out will begin to have some bull**** pro-Hussein slant.
BC/BS opened a walk-in “retail store” up the street.
They look at the Obamacare mandate and dollar signs start cha-ching-ching-chingning in their eyes.
The joke will be on them if things at SCOTUS go our way.
I’m taking some pretty heavy duty meds right now for a hospital acquired infection, and Walgreens is handling the infusion meds. They have been very efficient and professional, even to delivery via special courier when I was checked out of the hospital later in the evening than I had expected.
They’re saving a middle man cost, when it comes to drugs, if they sell their own insurance, so I imagine that’d be a plus on the business side.
My point is they can do that even without Hussein’s law...they’ve been moving toward such actions over the past few years.
The media is trying to make it look like Hussein’s law is responsible for Walgreen’s effort to make money.
I was actually rather impressed with their in-store clinic. I had to take one of my kids there with strep-throat symptoms at a late hour. The nurse-practitioner on duty said it looked like strep, but she ordered a lab test to be sure. Did not want to prescribe anything before getting the test results.
The kid kept fussing the next day so I ended up going to a hospital ER where they prescribed antibiotics. The test came back from Walgreens saying she tested negative for strep. She completed the antibiotics anyway and the throat was still sore. So obviously she didn’t have strep.
Their level of caution and professionalism blew the hospital away. The ER doctor just wanted to write a scrip to get us out of there.
In general, if you end up with problems with your insurance, and Walgreen’s is your insurer and you do not have a agent to walk you through the maze of bureaucracy and paperwork, you’ll be crying yourself at sleep at night wondering what your monthly Walgreen’s Ins monthly premiums had been spent on.
I’m not seeing the problem with “walk in” stores to get health insurance. More competition. I say get it out of the employer benefit business....that way, it doesn’t threaten jobs when the gov’t pulls crap. Make health insurance competitive & they’ll have to come down on their rates, offer better coverage etc....which in turn will cause ALL healthcare costs ($400 for emergency room visit for a busted/no stiches total of 25 minutes there ==personal experience)....ridiculous....
