Rebels say they are gaining ground in Libya; government disputes claim
CNN ^ | August 13, 2011

A Libyan mourner fires shots in the air at a cemetery on August 12 during the funeral of five rebels killed in the battle for the control of the oil-rich town of Brega.

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- Rebels said Saturday that they were gaining traction in a series of offensives in several parts of Libya controlled by ruler Moammar Gadhafi -- claims that the Libyan government swiftly disputed.

Heavy gunfire was heard in al-Zawiya, located about 33 miles west of Tripoli, where rebels had arrived. Rebels entered the city center and managed to cut off the road to Tripoli, they said.

Talha Jwaili, a rebel fighter, told CNN that rebels control al-Zawiya. Ten rebels died in the fighting, four from Zintan and six from al-Zawiya, he said. More than 20 people were reported injured.

A spokesman in the media office of the Military Council of the Western Mountain Region said that rebels control about 85% of the city and that clashes there are ongoing.

CNN could not independently confirm Saturday who was in control of al-Zawiya, nor other details of the rebels' accounts.

A government spokesman downplayed the fighting, telling reporters in Tripoli that the town is "absolutely under our control."

Al-Zawiya is strategically important because the coastal road through the city is the main supply line from the Tunisian border to areas held by Gadhafi.

The “rebels” seem to say this a lot.

Just take a look at the map. Even if it takes a year or two, the Rebels will conquer Libya.

Yes, and they may be right. I saw Al Jazeera for a while tonight, and they said the rebels appear to have 2/3rds of this city. Also moving more to cut off travel to the south. Meanwhile here is another piece of evidence that Gaddafi’s daughter Hana may not have been killed by President Reagan’s bombing raid. This time from records stored in the Libyan Embassy in London.

Six months ago Obama said it would take two weeks to oust Gadhafi.

The US and NATO have been bombing the government forces since March even though Obama has openly lied about US involvement since April.

LOL sure they will, all few hundred of them will take and control an area the size of Alaska. Sure they will, days not weeks. That is how long they will last without Obummer stealing millions from future generations of Americans to fund this illegal war.

Why do we keep getting involved in Middle Eastern wars? One dictator who is selling oil to the highest bidder will just be replaced by another dictator who will sell oil to the highest bidder on the world market. By being there we will just earn the undying hatred of some and the very short lived love of others.

Thanks for that piece of info concerning Qaddafi’s daughter Hana. Not able to keep up, and did not know this till was brought up in your posts. No confirmation on two of quddafi’s kids now. Betting this is a attempted poke at the US by quddafi. Hana was adopted?

NATO will withdraw in September, leaving only USA and UK to do the bombings, IMHO.

One thing’s for sure, Western European leftists will still demand more US troops and more effort on the part of the imeprial US war machine to stop the Libyan civil war. The Iraq war may have been pointless and useless, as far as they’re concerned, but come on now, we’re talkign about Libya here, you know, the place for Euroepans get their oil from. This is actually important, and the US needs to do the dirty work so that French and Italians dont have to walk to work.

You know what? If Bush was still President, the Europeans would never had manipulated the U.S. into intervening in Libya.

Whatever might be said of Qaddafi 's personal crimes, the Libyan people seem to be thriving. A delegation of medical professionals from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus wrote in an appeal to Russian President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin that after becoming acquainted with Libyan life, it was their view that in few nations did people live in such comfort:

[Libyans] are entitled to free treatment, and their hospitals provide the best in the world of medical equipment. Education in Libya is free, capable young people have the opportunity to study abroad at government expense. When marrying, young couples receive 60,000 Libyan dinars (about 50,000 US dollars) of financial assistance. Non-interest state loans, and as practice shows, undated. Due to government subsidies the price of cars is much lower than in Europe, and they are affordable for every family. Gasoline and bread cost a penny, no taxes for those who are engaged in agriculture. The Libyan people are quiet and peaceful, are not inclined to drink, and are very religious.

They maintained that the international community had been misinformed about the struggle against the regime. "Tell us," they said, "who would not like such a regime?"

There is every reason to believe that the people of Libya support Khadaffi and not the "rebels".
