Texas Governor Signs Bill for Tougher Hate Crime Penalties
LA Times ^ | May 12, 2001

After refusing for months to say where he stood, Republican Gov. Rick Perry signed a Texas hate crime bill Friday that strengthens the penalties for offenses against minorities, gays and others.

The James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Act was named for the East Texas black man who was dragged to his death from a pickup truck in 1998 by three white men, including two avowed white supremacists.

Heck, W had to take on the Byrd case in the presidential debates with Algore.

GWB was pressed to support ‘hate crimes’ legislation but noted existing criminal law was good enough.

Two of the guys that killed Byrd got the death penalty and the other got life. There was no need for a ‘hate crimes law.’

Perry is more liberal than GW Bush on this one....

“I’m not sure how you bringing up these “facts” is going to help get a conservative elected and get rid of Obama.”

I’ll help you here. These facts will come out in the next 15 months, like it or not - because the Democrats are EXPERTS at separating Republican candidates from their base - they don’t need our help. It is MUCH BETTER to have them out in the open now. If he’s properly vetted and still considered the best, so be it, and I, for one, will vote for him. If he’s not, then all hell is going to break loose once he’s nominated and the Dems start their attack campaigns.

“Face it. Perry has a significant chance of being the nominee.”

Agree...but we better know who the heck we’re nominating.

“Assuming for a moment he is the nominee, what are YOU going to do? Support him?, Vote for Him?

In my case, I’ll do just what I did in November, 2008, which is hold my nose, vote for him, and HOPE that his actions (for once) really do match his words. In other words, I’d rather vote for someone that I can trust from the start.

“If you say you would support Perry as the nominee, then I hope you realize you are shooting yourself in the foot with this stuff.”

No, we’re not. As I’ve said countless times this weekend, the Dems are more than capable of finding out every time Perry didn’t tie his shoelaces correctly, much less finding out about major policy weaknesses.

Nasty, nasty to not only approve of the concept of “hate crimes” but to increase the penalties.

Perry sucks.

I Googled “Perry, Muslim, ancestors”

Nothing yet but I’m only on page 32

I don't recall anything said by him about the subject in the intervening 10 years.

Although I'm personally opposed to so-called "Hate Crime" legislation, signing it was probably his best alternative considering the outcry over Byrd's murder and how Texas politics work.

Politics is an ugly business, none of those involved are perfect, and you play the hand you're dealt.

"I can guess you don’t like Perry, but why post a 10 year old story"

So people won't enable him to create such stories in the future.

LOL. Keep looking. I’m thinking Southeast Algeria, although the records might be a bit parched by now.

You're making excuses for him Ken.

If he was a man of principle, conservative principle, he would not have signed it.

GWB, even with his faults, took the right position on this while Governor of Texas. It's in the article.

This is a political hate crime. A crime against justice.

Has Mr. Perry learned NOTHING from the wholly evident political corruption of Voting Rights enforcement by the US DOJ -- enforcement of voting rights are an equivalent proxy for hate crime law enforcement?

Texas Governor GW Bush rejected the idea of hate crimes legislation in the 2000 presidential debates.

But it was OK for Texas Governor Rick Perry in 2001??????

It takes guts to stand on your principles, it's the difference between just being a "tell them what is popular" politician and being a statesman.

Yes, and anyone who posts facts and the history where Perry is concerned is a Democrat operative right?

Or is it we are just too stupid to know we are being played Bob?

Another loser, false argument from a Perry apologist.

Did you actually look to see if he’s changed his position? Or is your hatred of Perry so intense you instead look for articles, no matter when they appeared, to smear him.

I’m not a Perry apologist but I will tell you there is a hell of alot more that I like about him than not. The issues I was concerned about: Guardasil & TTC have been answered satisfactorily for me.

Perry is a staunch ally of Israel, a staunch 2nd amendment Governor, Pro-Life, Served in the military (which means he would be less likely to send our men and women overseas at a drop of a hat). He is pro-business, a (dare I say it?) capitalist/free market governor. These issues are what I base my opinions and my vote on. They are set in stone for me. Pro-Life, Pro 2nd Amendment, Pro-Israel...Period.

And because he IS a Governor he is part of the pool of individuals that we should be pulling candidates from; NOT Representatives from Congress.

Illegal immigration is another issue I’m researching but what I have seen so far is that Rick Perry is for Legal immigration and citizenship for those that follow the law. I’m not against legal immigration myself. Where the hell are the world’s truly persecuted going to go? And I’m not talking about the 3rd world heathens but those that are seeking asylum from oppression.

Bingo. There’s a lot of room for mischief in this flawed legal concept. Always enforced on the majority, but never on minorities. We already have laws against killing and injuring people.

But the most dangerous of its abuses is using the threat of being accused of a hate crime by the Marxists to muzzle otherwise free speech.

Sorry Perrybots. That’s demrat position.

Sorry for that last remark, that was a little harsh where you are concerned.

Doesn’t matter. He’s talkin’ the talk, as all RINOs do during the campaign season. He will fool a lot of the people all of the time, and he will take a sharp left turn one second after he’s sworn in.

Purging the RINOs is not going to be easy, nor will it be soon, but we must keep them out of the presidency. We must, or we are finished.
