My Commentary: My Visit to the Iowa State Fair

I visited the Iowa State Fair this weekend and was IMPRESSED at the demeaner of my fellow visitors. The "Butter Cow" display was VERY well attended. The Livestock and Plant displays were well attended as well. It looked like EVERYONE was having a good time. OH and no I did not eat anything on "a stick(had an OUTSTANDING Pork Tenderloin though YUMM)". I have seen a good cross-section of the people who are going to pull this country out of this(RR # 1 and corner of 5th and Main St People). If more people would do things like going to the Iowa State Fair and county fairs than looking at Washington DC and State capitols to solve thier problems then the United States would be a better place.

I was there just for the day on Saturday and my experience was similar though i did have the hard boiled egg on a stick. I particularly liked the fried string cheese curds.

I have a difficult time comprehending fried butter on a stick. Maybe it would be easier if I actually ate it.

One of the people I attended with had it. On the inside was some type of cake/bread substance that provided a sponge for the butter. It was battered and deep fried such that the whole thing looked like a corn dog.

I particularly liked the fried string cheese curds.

Rumor has it that they are still working out the bugs in the "on a stick" version of the fried string cheese curds.

I haven't been to the ISF in a quarter of a century; in those days there were plenty of food vendors, but 75% of them struck me as being mediocre or worse (even by the fair food standards of the day). Some of the by-the-slice pizza stands were downright scary, providing an olfactory experience eerily similar to standing in a pasture carpeted in fresh goat droppings.

Hopefully the situation has improved.

Never eat anything at the fair but corny dogs. The Texas State Fair (aka The Great State Fair of Texas) always has a competion for best new fried things.

They did have fried butter one year and I confess to trying it. It was surrounded by a cornbread type coating with butter in the middle. Way too much butter and not enough cornbread. I usually pass on these fad things and there is a long line for them.
