  • Physicists explain fireballs erupting from grapes in microwave oven

    02/19/2019 11:51:32 AM PST · by DUMBGRUNT · 73 replies ^ | 19 Feb 2018 | Bob Yirka
A trio of researchers with McMaster, Concordia and Trent Universities has solved the mystery of why pairs of grapes ignite into fireballs when cooked together in a microwave oven ...The tests consisted mostly of using thermal imaging cameras to capture the action as the grapes were heated and running simulations. They also tested other similarly sized fruit and plastic balls filled with water.

The words, written in big, white, Impact letters, caught my attention as I scrolled idly through Facebook a few months ago: “IF YOU REMEMBER THIS, THEN YOUR CHILDHOOD WAS AWESOME.” They were superimposed on an image that did instantly remind me of something: the SuperPlayground, a wooden play structure in a small park in my hometown, which was torn down and replaced several years ago. In the small, lefty community of Sebastopol where I grew up, in the wine country north of San Francisco, there were many playgrounds, but the SuperPlayground was everyone’s favorite. Whimsical details like a dragon slide,...

Until the Super Soaker came along in 1990, water guns hadn’t changed much in over a century. But the Super Soaker was 28 years ago, and a group of German engineers and designers think it’s finally time for water guns to evolve again. They’ve created the self-filling Spyra One that fires quick bursts of water instead of a steady stream, which promises to improve accuracy and distance. The Super Soaker was a staple of my childhood, as it was for millions of other kids, but most of my summer afternoons were either spent refilling the blaster, or endlessly pumping air...

..., and realize you have no recollection as to where you actually parked the car in the first place. Upon exiting the store, she climbed in a black Nissan — the vehicle was open and the keys were in the ignition — and drove home. Soon after, a local man exited the store and began wandering about the parking lot in an increasing state of agitation, before concluding that his black Infiniti had been stolen, and calling police to report the theft. ...She informed the manager that she wasn’t entirely happy with the car. For one, it was messy when...
  • Country Time Lemonade to help pay fines, permit fees for kids' lemonade stands

DENVER – Country Time Lemonade is launching a new initiative to help kids’ lemonade stands that land in hot water over permitting issues. Just last week in Denver, someone called the police on a lemonade stand run by boys who were trying to raise money for charity. Police shut the stand down, saying the boys didn’t have the necessary permit. The city later said the boys didn’t need a permit, but not before the story captured the attention of people nationwide, including Country Time. In response, the company is launching “Legal-Ade,” a team of people who will help lemonade stands...

Found the story on Independent UK, but it's banned from FR. It's a more meaty story than newsweak. Former prisoners of Chinese “re-education” camps for Muslims have said they were forced to drink alcohol and eat pork as part of Beijing's efforts to stifle dissent and ensure compliance with the central government. As many as 1 million Chinese Muslims are believed to have been detained in the camps. They are primarily from the province of Xinjiang, which has stubbornly resisted Beijing’s efforts to instill Chinese culture. Former inmates of the camps have now told The Washington Post just how...

Why Go to Church? One Sunday morning, a mother went in to wake her son and tell him it was time to get ready for church, to which he replied, "I'm not going." "Why not?" she asked.  "I'll give you two good reasons," he said. "One, they don't like me, and two, I don't like them."  His mother replied, "I'll give you two good reasons why you SHOULD go to church: One, you're 59 years old, and two you're the pastor!" Question Why can't the human body multi-task? If you turn your right foot and move it slowly in a clockwise circle. So you're going round in a circle with your foot. Then writing a number 6 with the same hand that you're moving your foot on a piece of paper. But the better way to show this actually is to take your hand on the same side of your body as you're moving your foot. Now, try and make that move in a circle in the opposite direction to your foot. The foot follows the hand. Why does that happen?...
  • North Korea Warns It May Detonate An H-Bomb In The Pacific

Kim Jong Un issued an unprecedented threat directly to President Donald Trump Friday. In response to the president’s warning at the U.N. that the America will “totally destroy” North Korea if the rogue regime attacked the U.S. or its allies, the North Korean leader threatened to “tame” Trump “with fire,” promising the “highest-level” action against the U.S. North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho clarified exactly what this might mean. “It could be the most powerful detonation of an H-bomb in the Pacific,” he said, adding that he has “no idea about what actions could be taken as it will be...

It’s been six days since a United Nations committee called on President Trump, in an unprecedented affront, to unequivocally and unconditionally reject and condemn racist hate speech and crimes in Charlottesville, Virginia, and around the country without evoking so much as a tweet from the White House. Maybe that’s because Trump has repeatedly rejected and condemned racism in Charlottesville and throughout the country – both unconditionally and unequivocally – in case the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, or CERD, hadn’t noticed. In fact, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley hasn’t even tweeted or said a word...

Even though the modern world isn’t any more dangerous than it was thirty or forty years ago, it feels like a more perilous place. Or, more accurately, we inhabit the world today in a way that’s much more risk averse; for a variety of very interesting and nuanced reasons, our tolerance for risk, especially concerning our children’s safety, has steadily declined. So we remove jungle gyms from playgrounds, ban football at recess, prohibit knives (even the butter variety) at school, and would rather have our kids playing with an iPad than rummaging through the garage or roaming around the neighborhood.Unfortunately,...

An elderly gentleman... Had serious hearing problems for a number of years.
