Britain must confront a culture of laziness, irresponsibility and selfishness that fueled four days of riots which left five people dead, thousands facing criminal charges and hundreds of millions in damages, Prime Minister David Cameron acknowledged Monday.
As rival political leaders staked out their response to England's unrest, Cameron pledged to deliver a raft of new policies by October aimed at reversing the "slow-motion moral collapse" which he blames for fostering the disorder.
"This has been a wake-up call for our country. Social problems that have been festering for decades have exploded in our face," Cameron told an audience at a youth center in Witney, his Parliamentary district in southern England. "Just as people last week wanted criminals robustly confronted on our street, so they want to see these social problems taken on and defeated."
Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith said Monday he was checking whether those involved in the riots should have their welfare payments cut, while London mayor Boris Johnson said young people convicted in the disorder would lose their right to use public transportation for free.
Cameron pledged to end a culture of timidity in discussing family breakdown or poor parenting, or in criticizing those who fail to set a good example to their children or community.
"We have been too unwilling for too long to talk about what is right and what is wrong," Cameron said. "We have too often avoided saying what needs to be said, about everything from marriage to welfare to common courtesy."

There is one way to do this fast. Turn off the spending spigot. Stop the payments to anyone who simply sits on their ass with their hand out. Make them work to have a house, food and heat. Do you think it will happen? I doubt it.
Only if the opposition is willing to "compromise" in a "bi-partisan" effort.

They will try to do it without God, and they are doomed to failure. What England needs is a country-wide revival. Watch the Islamists heads explode, if it were tried. But short of that they are past the point of reversal. If you teach people that the world revolves around them, and then tell them to behave, it won’t work. They want to world to conform to them, and have no interest in conforming to other peoples’ expectations.
Cameron himself didn’t do it - this is the product of 50 years of radical, thuggish, union-dominated socialism, since shortly after the end of WWII.
We already have the same problems in the US (a welfare-class lumpenproletariat, both black and white, that can’t be bothered to lift a finger except to commit crimes) and absolutely no common moral standards, because we have surrendered everything to the almighty State.
Maybe he’ll try to make some stab at reversing it, but will he get support? I doubt it. One person who has been singularly silent is the Archbishop of Canterbury, who theoretically should be a moral authority...but I guess he’s too busy promoting gay “marriage” for elderly bishops.

Here, theoretically, we have cut off welfare for young, healthy working age people. But the girls get pregnant and collect for their kids, and the males go around to their baby mommas (and their own mothers) and harvest their welfare checks. In England, the subsidies go directly to the men, so at least it is possible to cut them off (although I don’t think it’s going to happen).

You are right, here in USA after we pay for a female to have a baby we give her WIC which pays for food for her AND the baby until the baby is 5 in addition to food stamps and free meals at schools, plus housing, all medical ( including vision and dental) and cell phones

Yesterday someone posted a video link where people walked into a convenience store en mass took what they wanted and simply walked out. We all know that there are places/cities in this country where something like this can happen and there will likely be no consequences. It would not happen in small towns or rural areas and, if it did, it would be promptly put-down and punished. Rural societies are usually close knit and roguish behavior is simply not tolerated. Not only that, political correctness doesn't usually reign supreme in rural areas.

Exactly. “Discussing” and “criticising” and “pointing fingers” isn’t going to accomplish anything as long as the money keeps flowing. If the money-down-the-drain classes (welfare beneficiaries, “students,” unions, government employees) are going to riot over even discussing modest cutbacks in “benefits,” then they might as well privatize the whole country in one fell swoop and fight it out once and for all.
