Just moments before he was fatally wounded in an unprovoked attack, a San Diego police officer performed one last act of kindness; he bought a child food while buying his own dinner.

Thank you both for posting the video and the transcript.

Such a heart breaker. My God, I have no other words. Well maybe I do...

"I understand the suspect had lots of holes in him."

I hope by the time the smoke cleared there were so many holes so that what was left would not have been as big as a dime.

Y’all take a gander at this thread. It will make your head explode.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2762845/posts

There’s a dozen posters who actually defend the cold blooded murder of a police officer trying to respond to a domestic call.

This is why I’ve had it with FR. Too many looney juveniles spouting crap. This is tolerated by Jim Rob and the mods to the point where I have to think they agree with this sort of garbage.

Yeah, come and get me Mods. I’ll wear this Zot with pride. Buncha pathetic losers - you have totally lost your moral compass and your souls. What use is it when even FR can’t tell right from wrong?

I think it is a very difficult issue for Jim Rob and the Mods to have to deal with. It is probably best left for us to deal with - IMO.

Prayers up for this good and generous man and for his survivors.

For all our policemen, firemen, and emergency responders:

St. Michael the Archangel, defend them in the battle. Be their protection against the deceits and snares of the enemy.

May God rebuke them, we humbly pray, and do thou, O St. Michael, Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of Almighty God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.

I share in your sentiments. However, ignorance is where you find it. Free Republic is not completley immune to “Huff Post” or DU ignorance or crassness.

My point B_F is they don’t even try.

I am a retired LEO. I know full well that there are corrupt LEOs. I have ordered their arrests - including within my own department.

I am fully aware that there are incompetent and/or lazy LEOs. When their failure to meet professional standards leads to things like SWAT raids on the wrong premises, there should be consequences: discipline up to and including termination, civil and even criminal penalties.

I NEVER compounded and perpetuated, nor would I ever permit the compunding and perpetuation of a miscarriage of justice to cover up a mistake. You made an honest mistake or found out the information you were given was bad and got the wrong guy? It happens. When it does, take off the cuffs, apologize and drive him home. If you get sued, that’s what lawyers are for. You don’t make it better by fabricating, lying, perjuring and trumping up a case to cover your sorry *ss.

Civilian elected leadership must perform their oversight functions. Every LE agency and LEO should be accountable. These things should be unquestioned.

All that having been said, those here on this board who advocate or rationalize killing cops because their conduct or procedures in performing their SWORN DUTIES in good faith to enforce the laws enacted by the elected representatives of the people conflict with some childishly simplistic uber-libertarian view of what those laws ought, in their personal opinions, to be are - quite simply - morons with dangerously compromised judgement and a badly flawed or absent sense of proportion. Or sense of simple right and wrong.

And not peep from our Dear Leader. THAT is MY issue with HIM.

And some people act as if cops are perfect heros who should never have their actions challenged or have any public scrutiny at all. I don’t care how many good deeds an officer does, he still must be be accountable for his missdeeds, just like the rest of us.
By and large, that isn’t happening. Just look at that Canton Ohio cop and his history. Cops need to do a much better job cleaning their own trash and a much better attitude in dealing with the public. Even good cops become bad cops when they turn a blind eye at the behavior of other officers.
If cops don’t like their reputation, tough, they earned it.

Are you serious?

You’re going to tell ME what goes on around here? Tell you what, Jr., why don’t you wait by the side of the pool and get a feel for FR before jumping in and telling someone who’s been here nearly a decade and actually supported it for years what’s what.

“We call the as we see them”??? Who’s “we”?

Holy strawman Batman! Can you actually cite a real life example of this mythical being? Or does this creature exist only in your mind, like Obama unicorns and faeries?

There’s still lots of good ones. They do their jobs every day and it doesn’t make the news. Nor should it unless they do something truly exceptional or heroic. The people pay us to do a job. We should do it as professionally and as low-key as we can.

I think that one of the big problems nowadays is that there is a lack of emotional maturity in the ranks and even in the leadership. I worked for and with some supervisors who seemed to get their ideas of police work from TV shows. It isn’t necessarily a function of age, strictly speaking, but at some point every man or woman has to grow up (and frankly it’s more often the man) and get over himself - that is, get control of ones ego. Personally it took me nearly 20 years to really reach that point. Unfortunately, that was only six years before I pulled the pin.

LE is a young man’s game, physically, but an old man’s game emotionally. That’s a conflict not easily remedied. It starts by having good, sound, conservative traditions within the department. It is reinforced through careful selection and training. Looking at the training regimens employed in many academies these days, they’ve gotten more militaristic than when I went through thirty years ago. They’ve gotten more militaristic in some respects than the Army basic training I went through before that. I don’t think this is a good thing.

Another problem is lack of transparency in the disciplinary process. If the out-of-control guy in Canton PD gets disciplined, we won’t really know about it. The department can’t discuss personnel disciplinary issues in public or else they can be sued. (And he DOES need discipline - seriously). I really hope he does get disciplined, for everyone’s sake. I will be sore disappointed by the PD if they don’t take action. I will be even more sorely dissapointed in the city’s elected leadership if they don’t lean on the department to take action.

The other problem is with unions and arbitration. These things serve to protect officers from political vendettas because some cop arrested the councilman’s brother-in-law for DUI after said politico hit three parked cars and blowing a .28. Unfortunately, when the pendulum swings too far the other way, it enables lazy, incompetent, marginally corrupt and even unstable officers to continue to erode the public perception and performance of the department and to endanger their fellow officers and the public. I’ve seen that first-hand too.

In short, every situation needs to be regarded and evaluated in and of itself. The aggregate can lead us to certain conclusions about the leadership and standards of a department, but generalizations are always dangerous.

Sure are a lot of folks around here with that sentiment.

We have seen a lot of it over the years here, and even more lately. It's scary, because I see a war on police officers in this country, especially in this state, California. Just last weekend, a San Diego police officer was stabbed in the face. In the L.A. area, every week, officers are being shot, stabbed, run over and having objects thrown at them.... oh, not to mention their cars being overturned, trashed and burned during the predictable riots.

To my knowledge, a high percentage of LAPD officers are also in the military reserves and have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Of course, we see increasing anti-war sentiment on the forum also: equally disturbing.

I am equally disgusted with the way the forum has deteriorated. I can only hope it doesn't accurately reflect our society, but I do see that in this Ubama era, the war on law enforcement has stepped up and religious bigotry is off the charts. Very few have the strength to stand up publicly for what is right.

I’ve experienced bad cops. Collier county FL took the cameras out of their cars because they were being used against them. I’ve experienced their tin God attitudes. I’ve had one use me to get revenge against my father. Pay any attention at all and you know I’m. Correct. You are either another cop who hates any criticism or you’re willfully blind. Check out the history of the Canton Ohio police. Their most recent one is a jaw dropper. And it isn’t his first offense.
By the way, I’ve never commited a crime.
