GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann said today that Americans "fear the rise of the Soviet Union" during an appearance on a conservative radio talk show.
The Soviet Union broke up into 15 separate republics 20 years ago. Boris Yeltsin was the first freely elected leader of Russia, the largest of those republics.
"What people recognize is that there's a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward," Bachmann said on Jay Sekulow's radio show.
Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, was trying to explain that Americans are concerned about issues beyond federal spending and the debt.

Planning the day of announcement is key, it was only days ago that Perry felt the timing was right to make his announcement, yet there Palin is bus touring, appearing in Iowa, planning a massive tea party speech in Iowa in 2 weeks.
I figure that it had to show up, I think that dasboot is going to fill us in on the great hoax about how the USSR only faked breaking up to get us to let down our guard.
I knew that conspiracy was out there.
We’ll see. I still have her on my list. But I am not jumping on that nonexistent bandwagon. She gets in, she’s top tier. She’s top tier, she’s got my attention. Even if I decide to back her, I will not defend her if she makes “Bachmann-esque” gaffes, and I will not BOLO for supporters of other candidates to attack. That’s the kind of childish crapola one expects from a Paul supporter and I won’t have any part of it....too many Palin supporters are getting there.
Yep...that whole “wall coming down” thing? Never happened.
Her post-straw poll period is not her best. Maybe SHE should be up on Martha’s Vineyard. She seriously should take a couple of days off.
Perhaps one could make that mistake if they were in their 70's when the Soviet Union fell.
I'm 58, and I've never once referred to the Soviet Union in the present tense since it broke up. That was OVER twenty years ago, you know.
I'm sorry, but something's going on upstairs with Michelle. She's now making a major gaffe nearly every time she speaks to the press. Not good.
You’ve heard of Vladimir Putin and his desire to reconstitute the Soviet Union, right? Or have you been too busy hating on Bachmann?
>> She bothers me.
She’s probably exhausted, and operating without a teleprompter.
What was your FR screen name in 2008 when you (and no one else) purportedly saw how disappointed everyone at FR was with the Palin nomination. CGalen has a July 2011 signup date, so that persona certainly didn’t see what you are claiming.
Let me guess more Perry followers come to this thread to bash bachmann. Tokyo Rove found his candidate in Perry.
That's a habit that 99% of the world lost over twenty years ago. If she's got such a habit, it says something about her that should alarm most voters.
You are insane, freerepublic was ecstatic when Palin was chosen, we breathed a huge sigh of relief and finally found some joy in the 2008 election, she electrified us.
The Sarah Palin enthusiasm was off the charts at freerepublic.
Indeed. Moreover, anyone who is old enough to remember the Soviet Union can find it easy enough to call it the Soviet Union...I hear people say it all the time.
How would you know? You only signed up at FR last month.
Not to mention that fact that what you said is a complete falsehood. FR was ecstatic about Palin getting the VP nomination in 2008, and except for a small contingent of malcontents, has remained staunchly supportive of her.
Perhaps you're remembering the good old days when you were posting at DU.
You might "hear people say it all the time" at the old folks home. Few others would ever make that mistake. Least of all, a serious candidate for president.
The nomination belongs to Sarah.
LOL, it’s not that long ago. Look, I think it’s another in a long line of Bachmann gaffes, and certainly not presidential, but then I think she zero chance of being elected anyway.
Name Five
Hahaha...I don’t think you’ll know any of them.
I like Bachmann. I’d gladly vote for her over Obama. But talking about Americans fearing the Soviet Union in an interview in 2011 was not her best moment.
And I don’t think Putin has ever said he wants to reconstitute the USSR. He’s said its breakup was a catastrophe.
But this was pretty bad. I think we need to be objective. Imagine if Obama was being interviewed about defense policy and he said “Americans are scared. They’re worried about the Soviet Union”. What do you think the reaction would be?
