They set out to sell ice-cold lemonade, but now three Washington, D.C. protesters might need some legal aid.

Capitol police arrested three people Saturday afternoon for selling lemonade on the West Lawn of the Capitol Building. They were participating in “Lemonade Freedom Day” — a national demonstration against a spate of recent lemonade stand shutdowns by police and health inspectors.

According to the D.C. group’s Facebook event page, three lemonistas — Meg Mclain, K.n. Dill and Will Duffield — were taken into custody by Capitol Police. It is not known what the protesters were charged with. The Capitol Police did not return calls for information.

In the alternate universe where this happened under Bush’s watch, this would be on every newspaper as proof of Bush’s Fascism.

No, not an original thought, but it is startling to see how the Maddows and Olbermanns of the world seem to be suffering from an exacerbated version of their mental health challenges since Obama got in. They seem to have developed this rather large blind spot where repression is concerned.

Let civil disobedience and simple acts of kindness be poured as burning coals on the heads of our would be masters. Let them burn with our righteous indignation.

The responsible and peaceful response to this absurdity would be to open 100 lemon aid stands Monday, then more the next day. MLK taught us this.

So they didn’t pay the legally required bribes to the officious. It’s been happening little by little and for a long time through various administrations. It’s infected local levels as much as federal. Read about “nonpolitical politics,” “Vaclav Havel,” all. Be “normal,” if you have the courage.

The whole point of Lemonade Freedom Day was to be able to sell lemonade on your OWN lawn, not somebody else’s. FAIL.

Public property. It IS our own lawn, dammit!

And the sidewalk’s public property too, and you can’t set up your lemonade stand there either. These people just wanted to get their names in the news. Don’t they have lawns of their own?

The underlying issue is what moves me here. Lemonade stands are an endearing symbol of the American work ethic. Arbitrary restraints are dampening individual rights. Bureaucracy is defeating common sense.
