Officer suspended after leaving assault rifle with case and ammo in the road

HOPEWELL - A state trooper made a surprising discovery while surveying a flood-damaged area last Friday morning.

An assault rifle.

The state trooper was a part of the emergency response team surveying the western portion of Cumberland County, and discovered the rifle on Beebe Run Road in Hopewell.

The rifle belongs to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department and was accidentally left in the road by the officer, according to Sheriff Robert Austino.

“The officer was cleaning out his trunk when he got sidetracked by some trespassers,” Austino said. “Once the trespassers left, the officer got in his car and accidentally left the rifle behind.”

According to Austino, the “trespassers” were merely people that were getting too close to the flood damage caused by the Sunday storm that tore through the western part of the county.

Gee, I wonder what would have happened to an ordinary Joe, NJ citizen that had done the same thing?

My HQ unit was “in the field” once and a female Captain noticed that a female had come out of the latrine empty handed. Cap asked troop,” Did you forget something?”

“Scuse me?” came the snotty answer.

Cap asked troop again,” Did you forget something?”

Troop looks confused, then horrified, turns and races back in the latrine after her weapon.

Not cool, sheriff.

SUSPENDED?????

This is definitely a firing offense.

Any LEO that can’t ‘keep track of his weapon’ doesn’t deserve or rate wearing a badge.

There is a big difference between a mistake and downright negligence, or better yet, stupidity - then again being stupid isn’t against the law, but negligence, in this case certainly should result in this guy being canned....

This is New Jersey. The concern there is that a gun sitting on the side of the road will start firing bullets randomly, killing scores of people. Given that, you can expect this reaction.

It's only a gun. It wasn't an armed nuclear weapon. If there is no history of negligence on this officer's part, then I would cut him some slack. There's a world of difference between losing a week's pay and losing a career.

Let's not forget that the community has already invested in this individual. Doing the wrong thing could waste this investment.

I would rather see a dozen officers with bad attitudes fired than see an officer with respect for the public lose his job over an error.

What exactly constitutes an “assault rifle” as opposed to the regular shootin’ kind? Is it one with a bayonet? A scope? A mean face painted on the side?

A smart right wing bitter clinger would probably not touch it for fear of being videotaped in a scumbag cop sting. Don’t pick up drugs or kids either.

An assault rifle is any gun that looks scary.

Many times during my time as an Army NCO, I was able to fix this problem with two words:
Dummy cord.

I left a wrench and a tube cutter on the bumper of my truck one time. Drove 12 miles and only lost the tube cutter.
