Well I see some things have changed since I left that area, my house sold in days back in the early 90’s. BO has even screwed the housing up in DC, WOW.

Additionally waste runs down hill which means it flows to the low point, in this case a creek. Unless you want the extra expense of multiple pump stations then you have to take it to the low areas.

I mean your mind roars trying to figure out what the hell is making this piece of furniture move around like that. The fact that the whole world might be rattling doesn’t enter your mind, particularly, go with me on this, here on the east coast.

Yeah, raccoon...that’s the ticket. I wasn’t sure just what kind of animal was in my chair but a raccoon could well have fit under there.

and don’t forget I was dealing with an antsy dog who definitely would have been beside herself what with a racoon in the chair and everything.

;)

I work in Chesapeake. I felt my chair move a bit and then I felt a rolling motion, similar to a boat crossing a wake.

A coworker said, "That was an earthquake."

I agreed, looked at the USGS site and saw it listed.

You get yearly water in the cellar? Yes, I can see how that would be a cause for concern. If it’s not leaking in through any pipes, a check valve won’t stop that, having foundation repaired would though if it’s a concrete basement.

Felt it near the intersection of I-95 and I-20 in South Carolina! I thought I was getting vertigo or something until my wife called and asked me if I felt the Earthquake, she felt it too, we were about five miles apart as the crow flies.

We felt it in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, which is almost 1000 miles from the epicentre, but close to the northeast end of the Appalachian mountains. It was more noticeable in the downtown area, which is built on a river plain of mostly clay. The areas with more bedrock didn’t seem to notice the tremor.

It's been just plain h*!! trying to sell this house into the BO economy. It's not a junkheap-it's a completely remodeled 2800 s.f. colonial in a well-established golf community. Nice lawns, nice shade trees and nice neighbors and a five minute walk from the 14th hole. But I'm going to end up giving it away for a song, assuming I can even sell it. I'm considering making it a rental.

I’m in Annapolis this week - had two tremors, a slight one for about 10 secs and then a second more substantial one for 15-20 secs ...

With the first one, I was not sure if it was a tremor or a tree that hit the house [I am in a forested community right now] - but when the second one was shaking all the walls, I knew it was a quake ...

Not bad though, lived in SF for 2 years growing up and we had a couple of about the same size - no big deal ...

Well it is only a song in that area. Fairfax/Prince William etc area was and is just too expensive for most to live in.

We experienced a 5.8 earthquake on August 23, 2011. The damage was not too severe but the President responded the next morning with this.

Actually, it wasn’t bad when I moved there in ‘97. It was actually a little cheaper that where I’d been living in MD. We bought our house the year before the real estate boom and we didn’t overpay for it. But things went nuts after that. I could have made a 200 percent profit if I’d sold the house in ‘05. Looking back I wish I would have sold, but things were going gangbusters and I didn’t want to move. Now I’m nearly under water. Not quite, but another year of this and I’ll be swimming with the fishes-at least financially.

Can't help it! Just received this from a Freeper friend and it must go on this thread!

5.8 MAG QUAKE ROCKS DC-NYC
HURRICANE NEXT?

Resident Obama has just confirmed that the DC earthquake occurred on a rare and obscure fault-line, apparently known as “Bush's Fault”. Obama also announced that the Secret Service and Maxine Waters continues an investigation of the quake’s suspicious ties to the Tea Party. Conservatives however have proven that it was caused by the founding fathers rolling over in their graves.

I agree with your take on the primary dangers in your area, and your thoughts on the modern technology that helps find new faults.

You’re not the first person I’ve known to think the Big Island might be a good place to settle down.

It would seem to me that a volcanic range might itself be prone to shaking.

All in all, modern civilization has benefited from a fairly static surface area. We know in the past things weren’t always that way, and I suppose in the back of my mind I sometimes wonder if a new restructuring of the surface might take place at some point.

“If we draw a line from VA epicenter to CO epicenter how close to the center of the line is New Madrid?”

I looked up each city’s approximate latitude...

Cokedale, CO. 37.144
Mineral, VA. 37.48
New Madrid, MO 36.59
Honshu, Japan 37.67
Fukushima 37.57
San Francisco 37.46
