That is probably a reasonable precaution.

Both of those plants are +/-15 miles of the epicenter.

My son and his girlfriend are in North Myrtle Beach. They probably caught a tremor there, plus Hurricane Irene is supposed to hit on Thursday as a Cat 4.

LOL - it WILL happen again. The best you can hope for is not in your lifetime. Although the periodic nature of earthquakes shows it has a pretty good chance of occuring in the next 50 years.

Here in Seattle we are past due for a 9+ out in the Pacific. That WILL put a huge hurt on us, Portland, Vancouver, etc. But it won’t be as bad as WHEN the New Madrid lets loose again.

The geology in the Midwest and East allows the seismic waves to travel farther and with greater intensity. As seen by reports of felt motion all up and down the coast from a <6 magnitude quake.

Yet another update: Back down to a 5.8 Magnitude; 3.5 miles deep.

I know there are faults throughout America....there are faults in Houston and Texas. I guess we need to start expecting these faults that haven’t been active for 100’s of years to wake up.

Most of DC was built on swamp land that was drained and filled...there are no tall office buildings in DC....and when the Wash Monument was constructed..they may not have known about how to handle a big load, over a small foorprint, on a soft foundation...

I was in the Loma Prieta earthquake. It was a 7.1 and lasted 45 seconds. 5.9 is a little tremor in comparison.

If true you’re right. There seems to be an element of overreaction in the reporting so we’ll see.
